The Opera House has drawn good crowds this week. Truck patches are looking up since the rain of Thursday. Little Harold Willoughby was taken with measles yesterday. Turnbough left for St. Louis yesferday to buy another caiload of horses and mules. Mrs. Marks, of Hazlehurst, was the guest of her niece, Mrs. John A. Penn, on Thursday. Mesdames. O. Newton, Jr., Geo. Lewenthal and Ligon were New Oi leans visitors this week. Jackson is trying to keep up with Brookhaven and is erecting many handsome buildings. Among them is a fine hotel. Mr. John A. Penn is engaged in painting Antioch church in this county. Mr. Penn keeps busy — lie’s swift and ready. Delightful refreshments were served and Miss Mabel was the recipient of numerous beautiful and useful gifts. Hon. Geo. W. Didlake, presi dent of the Board of Supervisors of Copiah county, was a Brook haven visitor yesterday. Bridal wreath, lilac and other fragrant springtime flowers are making the air sweet with the redolence of their perfume. Little Robert Thompson is spending the anniversary of his mother’s death with his grand mothei, Mrs. Hattie Sherman. Mrs. Ada Davis Smith and Miss Annie Lewenthal went up to Jackson yesterday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Z. D. Davis. Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Stamps delighted their daughter, Miss Mabel, and her young friends, with a party in honor of her twelfth birthday on last Saturday. Nola White, the leading spirit of the new town of Nola, was shaking hands with Brookhaven friendsr yesteday. Nola is a fine combination of business and sun shine. Mr. Higginbotham, the saw filer for the Pearl River Lumber Company, has built a beautiful cottage residence in the Seavey Ad dition, next to Mr. John A. Penn’s attractive home. Mrs. Josh Priebatsch entertain ed the Whist Club on Wednes day afternoon. The prize was won by Miss Beulah Wilson; the visitor’s prize by Mrs. John Car penter. The Stonewall Guards made a creditable and handsome appear ance at the funeral of Wesley Nixon on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Nixon was a member of the company and was buried with military honors. W. P. Hubert was “up to now,” as usual, oU the 17th. Little sprigs of shamrock were given as souvenirs to visitors. Guy Norton — charged with obstructing a street crossing and fined $5.50 and costs—was the only case disposed of. Owing to the falling off in police business the City Council at their last meeting decided to dis pense with the services of the Assistant Marshal, D. 13. Magee, and Assistant Night Watchman, Carlisle, after theyliad been served with 30 day’s notice. Colds Cause Pneumonia. The Recital billed for Whit worth College last night' was un avoidably postponed, on account of the sad announcement of the death of Mrs. Z. D. Davis, of Jackson, who was a devoted cousin of Mrs. J. II. Willoughby, one of the teachers, who was most in terested in the program. Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby and Miss Belle Bowen left for Jackson yes terday, where the funeral, took place at 10 o’clock today. The Name Witch Hazel. The name Witch Hazel is much abused. E. C. The price of cotton has suffered several big drops during the last three days. The Brookhaven mar ket closed yessterday at 1±*4 cents with very little of the staple offered for sale. Dr. Solon Wilson has been spending the week in New Or leans on an imporlantjprofessional mission. He was attending Mr. Louis Cohn, who had to undergo a difficult surgical operation. The doctor will be back today. Dr. J. W. Bennett has pur chased the Ed. Schaller property lately advertised in The Leader, paying therefor something over $2,300. This and other property in that locality has nearly doubled its value in the {.ast several years. Dressmakers are over run with work in this city. The amount of sewing that is placed in the hands of those willing to do the work is past all belief except to those who have it in hand. Love of dress is again gaining the ascendency; and the pocket book is not con sidered in the end to be attained. The City Council has passed an order to put on a da}' service of electricity for fans, etc., as soon as 100 fans, or their equivalent, are subscribed for. Supt. Fewell is quite sure the required limit will be reached in the early future. The Leader will put in an elec tric motor to run its machinery aa soon as regular day service can be secured. • Hose! A new bank, a new hotel and a hospital are germinating this springtime along with other bud ding enterprises. Brookhaven is well able to foster any or all of these things and more; but it takes some strong-souled purpose and person, or persons, behind such projects to bring them into materialization. There has been so much said about “the new ho tel”, foi instance, that has resulted so far in a “much ado about nothing,” that wo are inclined to wait until we see the brick laid before we further enthuse on this subject. Lincoln again comes out ahead in a contest of merit. At the competitive test a few nights ago at Clinton, at which Attorney General Williams and two members of the Legislature served as judges, Edgar Godbold was awarded the final place as the representative of Mississippi Col lege at the State Inter-Collegiate oratorical contest to take place at the Crystal Springs Chautauqua next Summer, and Chester Byrne was chosen for the second place. Both are Lincoln county young men. Chas. W. Stephenson, a farmer living west of Magnolia, gave his infant son morphine instead of calomel through mistake, causing its death seven hours later.
