A Mhrrruv* Et.awp A lew 'ldays sgo ('laude Potter and a younrt friend attempted to cross the sluice- north of the 'i y which runs fron the s'aughter bouts into the Yel lowstole. The sand which comlprLd the Ibed of the sluice looked bard and firm and they had no hesitancy in at tempting to cross it, but when they reached the centre they found they were walking on treacherous quick sand. They took off their clothes and got dowy on their kntes to keep from sinking farther, while they called for help I ut no one came, until at last Mr. Potter managed to get out, when he procured a pole which was close by and reached it to his companion, who by that time had gone down In tile sand up to his armpits, and he was by that means pulled out. Both of the boys were very much frightened when they found them selves again together on terra firma. The episode comp'etely marred their day of proposed pleasure, and though they had an elegant lunch along, with bottles of champagne, they didn't have suffcient appetite to attack a sandwich nor the courage to pull a cork. He was not In favor of having it removed to Anaconda; be wanted it to etay at Helens which he thought by all means was the mo-t sulting plaOe in every rep.ect for it, but II it did have to be removel, he wanted to see a better town than Ana coude picked out for it to be taken tV'. He did not think, however, that there was any danger of the capital golui away from Helena. He didn't regard the vote of the few membelr of the convention ln the committee of the whole wbtle a large jnumber of others were abont as Iring any iadlacation of a removal of the caplital. There are too mlny i ,o1 ment ito Helena who, own land in 'he town to let thecapital get away from them. A Montama loy's Reward of Merit. It is exeedingly gratifying to the many friends of Capt. and Mrs. Hl.r mon and their son Leo C. to learn ol the unprecedented progress and sue me of the latter in his school life at the Mount Stt Louis Institute, Mont treal, Canada. Leo left Montana for Montreal a month and a half after school had begun, and, alone, with no friends or aciuaintsncee, presented himselfbefore the authorities of the Institute and commenced his ae demle career. From the very beginning he applied himself most assiduously to his studies and to all the duties attend. ant on the rules and regulations of the Institute, and rapidly roe in the estl. mation of his teachers, as well a in that of his school fellows, and with that true pluck and vim so thoroughly characteristle of an Amerlean youth, he eame right to the front in all that he undertook. At the end of the s.hool year, and at the conclusion of the ceremonies observing same, Leo was presented with the first gold medal by the directors of the Inlost tote as a rward for attaining highest couons i scholarship and deportment He alo received seven secondary prie. The securing of the firt gold medal in only eight months of the irt year, is considered ad weognlasd by ,l covemorant with the routine duties of thb Institute, mas amethleg most remarkable, ma as It nevr be le has been scnomplished. The ir portanue of this enterprise has been repeatedly set fprth in the columns of the JOURNAL, and It is not neeessary to repeat what I as already been said and what everyone admits to be true. What is neoessi. y though, is that our business men turn out to attend the meeting to-day at. show by their prerence that they feel he im. portance of the occasion. Aia enter pri-e like this, that promises so much for our city and Its business interests, should not be left to a few energetlo and enthusiastic cltizens to poush along. Help and encouragement is needed In Its infancy, not when it baM been safely born and is on the way to a vigorous eziitenee. Therefore we ask our people to turn out to-day and by their presence show the people from the coun.ry that Mile- City is fully alive to the possibilitlee of its future.
