Order your fruit trees for spring delivery. Chamber of commerce meeting next Tuesday night. Montana will lead all other states in growth and develop ment this year. The railroad rumors are here again, and they look consider ably better than usual in their new spring dresses. Flathead county has enough lakes, if properly stocked, to make the fishing industry one of large commercial importance. Even the most notorious kicker and bellyacher in the town ought to be interested in the organiza tion of a chamber of commerce. Maybe the government main tains that weather bureau at Havre as a sort of ' 'horrible ex ample" for the rest of the coun try. Whitefish, the town with the big pay roll, will be heard from frequently during the present year in the way of growth and prosperity. Now that the movement is under way for the organization of a chamber of commerce, the citizens of Whitefish have an op portunity to show their mettle. Are you a booster or a buster? People in Whitefish do not as yet appreciate the value of the surrounding land, and it can be bought, in many cases, at a very low price. A few more years of development, however, will work a great change. Before the water works system was installed in Whitefish it was said that a steam laundry would pay if water was handier. The water is now here, but still no laundry, although everybody rec ognizes that such an institution would pay well. Every land owner in the vicini ty of Whitefish should set out some fruit trees this coming spring. They will bring better returns upon the investment than anything else. There is a large variety of fruit to select from which is adapted to the soil and climate of this locality. There are evidences that an active demand for real estate will prevail in Whitefish during the spring and summer, and it is probable that a great deal of property will change hands. There is considerable inquiry for investments in this line at the present time. Virtue, like depravity, is catch ing. Either may be made epi demie. If the standard of char acter among leaders is high, the entire community is benefitted. The higher one's station in busi ness and the larger his sphere of influence, the greater is his re sponsibility to his fellows,—For syth Times. Reports from Helena state that the house tabled, by a vote of 25 to 21, Representative Hutchin son's motion authorizing the ap pointment of a lawyer for the land investigation. If you are, investigate Whitefish. Here is a town in a country that is undeveloped, al though there are immense natural resources. Five years ago the country in this vicinity was practically a wilder ness. It has advanced rapidly since that time, but de velopment has practically just started. There are many opportunities in a new town which cannot be found in the older ones. Development is more rapid. You are not looked upon with suspicion for years after you locate. You soon acquire standing in the com munity. Business changes arid real estate transfers are constantly being made, and things are moving all the time. Investigate the advantages of Whitefish. As a basis from which to build the town has large railroad and lum bering pay rolls. It is located upon a lake, the scenic beauty of which is not surpassed anywhere, and which is I certain to become widely known as a resort. An ideal i place in which to live, unless you consider the newness of ! the town and country a drawback. The town is incor porated, and has water works, electric lights and tele phones. Thousands of acres of land, mostly timbered, sur rounds the town, but which as yet is almost wholly unde veloped. The soil and climate are adapted to the raising of all fruits and farm products grown in the northwest. ! A good market for all that can be produced. Land is in-1 creasing in value every year, and the increase will be more rapid from now on. Come on in; the water's fine. Get hold of some prop-! erty and grow up with the country, at the same time 1 growing into wealth and affluence. ATTEND THE MEETING E VERY business man and property owner of Whitefish should be present next Tuesday night at the council rooms, when a chamber of commerce will be or- j ganized, provided the proposition which the committee! has to submit meets with approval. A chamber of commerce is something in which ev- ' ery citizen with property in the town should be interested. That such an organization, properly conducted, could ac- ; complish much good, there is no doubt. The organization as planned will be for the town as a whole, and will not represent the interests of any particular clique or faction. It is a proposition upon which our business men and citi zens can get together and work in harmony, and they should do so. To accomplish as much as possible, the organization should have a secretary who could give considerable time to the work, and who should be paid for his time. To meet this and other necessary expenses, a good plan would be for the members to pay monthly dues. These matters, however, and the scope and character of the work, can be decided upon by the members. The main thing at present is to get the organization started. A line of work which such an organization could prop erly take up would be the securing of settlers for the stump lands adjacent to Whitefish. With this end in view, a list of these lands which are for sale could be se cured, and prospective settlers could be directed to the owners. The matter of securing new business industries for which there is room could also be expeditiously handled, and a great deal might be accomplished in this line. The organization, if it desired, could aid in the de velopment of Whitefish lake as a resort, could attend to having our lakes and streams stocked with fish, and han dle innumerable other propositions as they may come up. head county democratic news papers and politicians during the late campaign, it would be inter esting to hear their opinions now. By the way, what newspaper was it that asked, "What will become of the timber investiga tion if Hutchinson and Donlan are elected?" With the Burlington trains bringing many additional people into this section of the country during the coming summer, the attractions of Whitefish lake as a resort should be made the most of. The new service will be of great advantage to the lake re sort, and will open up greater possibilities of development. It has been suggested that the Whitefish chamber of commerce, when organized, have a huge signboard painted and placed at the Columbia Falls junction, reading, "Only eight miles to Whitefish; stay on the train." a Of course, this is not to be taken seriously. Whitefish ought to have a gym nasium, either run for profit by some person, or through a club organized for that especial pur pose. That there is a generally felt need among the younger men of the town for such a place is plainly evident, and they would give any movement in this direction their enthusiastic sup port. The arrival of a crew of Great Northern railroad surveyors in Kaiispell to work on a north and south railroad connection between the Great Northern and Northern Pacific has again given rise to the hope that this long-talked-of road may be built soon. This is a piece of work that has long been under consideration, and there is reason to believe, in view of the opening of the reser vation, that it will be done this year. The new line would mean a great deal in the development of Flathead county, and its con struction would be particularly timely this year. Just what it would mean to Whitefish is un certain, but it has always been the talk that when the line was built the junction with the Great Northern would be made here. Flathead county seems to have a third house member in the leg islature who is cutting quite a swath. What's the use of going to all the trouble and expense of getting elected to the legislature, anyhow? It's easier to get your friend and partner elected as speaker, and thus be in a position ! to tell him where to ''head in." , As showing the way land is ad vancing in price in the vicinity of Whitefish, we have in mind a tract of 40 acres which sold for $400 two years ago. A year later the same land changed hands again, the price being $1,000. The owner now values the land at $2,000, and is not anxious to sell even at that figure. This land, however, is quite near the town. It is reasonable to suppose that before many years a branch rail road will be built along the north fork of the Flathead river, in Flathead county, and thence into the British possessions, and the fact that various railroad inter ests are seeking charters from the Canadian government to build through this country shows that it is looked upon as a prob able desirable move for the fu ture. It hardly seems probable, however, that any construction work will be done upon such a line in the immediate future, but with the rapid development that this section of the country is undergoing the time may not be far distant when the road will be built. Church and Clergy. The German Baptist Brethren have organizations in forty-one of the states with 1,154 churches, an increase of fif ty ^-eight over the last report. Rev. Dr. Albert H. Newman of Tex as, the church historian, addressed the recent congress of European Baptists at Berlin on "Baptists as Pioneers In Liberty of Conscience." Bishop Ibarra of Pueblo, Mex.. has received a letter from Pope Pius offer ing him the archbishopric of Mexico, made vacant by the death of Archbish op Alakon. The Pueblo prelate has ac cepted the office. The official statistics of the strength of Congregationalism, so far as they can be ascertained, show that there are 12,801 churches, chapels and stations throughout the world, with a church membership of 1.433,000, and 1,074,854 scholars In the Sunday schools. Science Siftings. Mars has a day forty-one minutes longer than our own. A photographic process which gives both perspective and relief is the in vention of Professor Lippninn of Paris, a pioneer in color photography.
