Smeltz left Friday for Tacoma where she expects, to visit for some time. ! Mr. and Mrs. Coverdale, who have been visiting here, went to Kalispell last Friday. Jefferson had the mis fortune to scald her foot very badly last Thursday, by dropping a tea kettle full of hot water on it. Principal Gloyde is fitting up a chemical labratory at his home in Columbia Falls for analytical chemistry. One of his recent ex periments resulted in burning both his hands severely with an acid. During the next 12 months there will be four eclipses, two of the sun and two of the moon. Only one of these, however, the complete dark ness of the moon on the night of May 28, will be visible here. The four parties who were arrest ed for gambling last week were to have had their preliminary hearing in Judge Garr's justice court last Thursday morning, hut on account of the complaining witness not appearing to proscute the case, the defendents were discharged. Misses Margaret and Edith Roe buck entertained last Thursday evening at cards. A very pleasant evening was spent after which a dainty lunch was served. Those who enjoyed the hospitalities were, Misses Cora and Luella Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Barter, Messrs. Bugg, Tillett, Shoaf and Anderson. The annual Past Masters' meet ing of Kalispell lodge No. 42, A. F. and A. M., will he held this even ing.. All officers of the lodge will he filled by past masters and they will confer the third degree. There are now 17 past masters of Kalis pell lodge who will participate in these ceremonies. Examinations were held at the school house Saturday for those who had completed their studies in geography and physiology and were conducted by Miss Mahan. The following pupils took the examina tions: Jesse Monk, Lillian Hyde, Lillian Micho, Jessie Smith, Bertha Larson, Mattie Depew, May Van Dyke, Cora Grinde, Everett Bardin, Calvin Edwards, Clarice Abbott, Agnes Swanson, Dorcas Ferguson and Florence Tallman. The new almanac tells of inter esting events of this year. The first legal holiday after New Year's—Washington's birthday, on February 22— is shown to fall on Tuesday, Easter comes early, on March 27; July 4 falls on Monday; Labor day is Monday, September 5; Thanksgiving day is November 24, and Christmas falls on Sunday. For those who are superstitious it will be a good year, for there is not a single ' * Friday, the thirteenth. ' ' There are numerous narrow escapes, however, • for a large number of Thursdays and Saturdays have 13 as their date. John Hennessy returned from Spokane Sunday morning. Mrs. H. E. Card was very much under the weather the first part of the week. Miss Irene Leopold of Kalispell visited here Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Freudenthal. Clarence Collins is hack to his duties in the post office again after being off a week with the mumps. Ben Nolter has moved into Rev. White's house, the one recently vacated by Thomas Dawson and family. A. Goins and Harry Peasley were plunking at the upper end of the lake Saturday afternoon and re turned with some nice trout. County Superintendent of schools, Miss May Tromper, returned last Wednesday from a visit of several weeks with friends and relatives in Ohio. T. A. Busey, former editor and business partner in the Kalispell Journal, has purchased a half in terest in the Conrad Observer, which is one of the^ best paying propositions in that line in the state. Willie Harrow, the eight-year old hoy whom Probation Officer Lang took charge of here a week ago Sunday, for being surrounded by undesirable influences, was sent to his grandmother, who lives near Decorah, la. The Kalispell Journal reports that a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Dickey, who are now residing in Kalispell. Mr. Dickey is chief clerk in the super intendent's office here, hut is now off on an extended vacation. Have you a week throat? If so, you cannot be too careful. You cannot begin treatment too early. If it hadn't been for the big and generous heart of Judge Garr, sev eral other parties might have been on his docket last week for taking horses without the owner's consent. Larter, Misses Jackson, Cora and Luella Thompson, Edith and Margaret Roebuck, and Messrs. Tillett, Groene and Bugg comprised a sleigh ride party, which drove to Columbia Falls Saturday evening. They took supper at the Gaylord hotel, and afterward were joined by a number of Columbia Falls friends in Main's hall, where they danced until 12 o'clock, and then returned home, having had a splen did time. Homesteaders who filed on lands before Dec. 1, 1919 are watqhing with keen interest the bill which was introduced in the lower house of congress some time last week, providing that all who filed on gov ernment lands previous to that date he given until May 15th to estab lish their residence thereon and giving a three jnonths' leave of ab sence to all others who now occupy homestead lands. The extremely cold weather prevailing in some parts of the homestead zone inspir ed this move, which has passed the house,' received the endorsement of the interior department and is now I up to the senate.—Cut Bank Press.
