It is thought by his friend that the fire was outside of Eastland's territory, that the mistake was occassioned bv the fact that it had already been reported out, and that at the time he was attending two other fires. After the federal inspection in Butte resulting in the notice that short weight measures were worse in that city than in any other, the federal dairy inspector, Levi Wells, made inspection and on December 8 announced that most of the butter obtained in Butte was unfit for con sumption and under weight. Other butter is water-soaked to give it weight, while the milk is poor. Constuction work in western Mon tana being done by the Chicago, Milwaukee and Puget Sound rail road company is progressing satis factorily to toe managemt. Special preparations are being made by the company for snow slides this winter in the hope of doing away with much of the danger of them. Snow sheds are being built in some places and is planned to make cuts during daylight when possible. On order of John G. Clark, of Fromberg, fruit inspector, a carload of apples shipped to this state to Lindsay Company in Washington, was destroyed by tire recently. The fruit was diseased with scab and codling moth and it is the desire of state authorities to keep such fruit from Montana markets. After today the rate on oranges from the Pacific coast to Miles City on the Chicago, Milwaukee and Puget Sound road will be $1.15 per hundred pounds. The rate during last season was $ 1.35 and before 1909 was $1.85. The r a t e on oranges is now the same for Miles City as for Billings. Action is on foot to secure a new county witth Wilbeaux as the county seat, the county to consist of a part of present and Dawson Cus ter counties. During November, in the forestry district with headquarters at Mis soula, contracts and sales for tim ber was made amounting to 5,172, 000 feet. A great portion of the timber varied from one to five dol lars per thousand feet. A great portion of the timber was green, injured but not killed, by the recent fires. Bartenders of several saloons in the state struck last week, it being the plan to strike unless propsietors stopped the sale of Montana made beer. The strike was the result of the trouble between two unions of brewery workers over control of work at the Montana Brewery in Great Falls. In the report of State Veterinarian M. E. Knowles it is shown that dur ing the fiscal year ending Novem ber 30, there were 1,020 settlers horses, 5,985 head of cattle and 799 swine brought into the state.
