Pumping Plant Beats Dams
Dams Washed Out hut Pumps Serve 26 Years

■pUMPING irrigation is by no
means limited to small individual
farm plants as can be seen by the
record of the Harlem Irrigation dis
trict which operates a successful
pumping plant furnishing water for
some 11,000 acres on 100 Blaine
county farms. The pumping system
installed 26 years ago is still using
the original electric motors and
pumps.
The man who can vouch for the
dependability and practicality of
the system is Thomas M. Everett,
president of the irrigation district
for 56 years and jusf recently re
tired at 83. The irrigation program
began back in 1892 when Everett,
his brother J. M. Everett, Vincent
Tefaur and Vincent Pauly organized
the Harlem Irrigation Co. and began
building ditches and a dam across
the Milk river near the present site
of the pumping plant.
Rebuild Dam 5 Times
Five times the brush and rock
dam was rebuilt across the river to
divert the water into ditches. Each

labor and horsepower were cheap
and the materials cost nothing.
The present pumping plant was
installed in 1922 and has been used
from April to November each year
since then with no major break
downs. Two 100 hp. electric motors
furnish power for the two large
pumps capable of 100 second feet of
water per minute each. These two
pumps are housed in a building on
the river bank.
Original Cost $45,000
The pump superintendent, A. J.
Granger, lives near the plant and is
largely responsible for the plant's
no-breakdown record during his 23
years of service. The original pump
installation cost $45,000.
The irrigation district operates on
$33,000 a year, supplying water for
11,000 acres on 100 farms. This
amount includes the cost of ditch
riders and maintenance as well as
pumping. The cost to the farmers
then is $3 an acre, but the actual
pumping costs only $1 an acre. The
eight months pumping costs about
$11,000 for probably 2 acre feet of
water of which only one is actually
available on the farms.
