Paved highway to our door. i substation superintendent, put the cheapest and fastest gains on beef cattle when used in place of com silage in an otherwise similar ration during 1947 feeding trials at the station. Three different rations were com pared in the tests, according to Paules. The most efficient of the three was based on the wet beet pulp and rolled barley. Composed of the pulp and the barley, plus alf alfa, beet tops, and salt, it gave an average daily gain per animal of 2.622 pounds at a feed cost per 100 pounds of gain of $12.21, Two other rations which gave somewhat less favorable results were respectively (1) wet pulp and ground barley, plus alfalfa, beet tops, and salt, 2.578 pounds of daily gain and $12.73 feed cost per 100 pounds of gain, and (2) corn silage and ground barley, plus alfalfa, beet tops, and salt, 2.336 pounds of daily gain and $15.82 feed cost. Paules said that 30 animals di vided into three lets were used in the feeding trials. Medium Wool Ewes Most Prolific SOME EVIDENCE that medium wool range ewes will produce a larger lamb crop than either fine or coarse wool ewes is reported by the Wyoming experiment station. A comparison made in one large Wyoming flock showed that 100 me dium wool ewes had produced 127 lambs weighing a total of 1,449 pounds at birth. Lamb production for 100 fine wool ewes was 118 lambs weighing 1,369 pounds, while 100 coarse wool ewes produced 112 lambs weighing a total of 1,343 pounds.
