HOWARD WELCH DID YOU EVER FISH through a hole in the ice at 20 degrees below zero? If you haven't, you have cer tainly missed something, though you may live longer. At below-zero temperatures, the fish that are caught bounce out on the ice, flap a few times and then freeze solid. When the fisherman can stand it no longer, he gathers up his fish and hikes homeward. Then these fish, frozen solid for sev eral hours, can be put into a tub of cold water and will immediately thaw out and come to life, just as good as ever. Now, were they dead, or weren't they dead? When is a frozen fish dead, anyway? As most people know, the vaccine for Bang's disease (Brucellosis), con tains live bacteria. If these bac teria, in the vaccine bottle, should die, then it is no longer a vaccine and is of little or no value against brucellosis. Many and many a dose of brucellosis vaccine that had no more value than so much dishwater, has been administered to calves. The vaccine had not been kept cold, or had been subjected to sharp ups and downs of temperature, or was too old, etc. "Frozen Fish" Vaccine Now we have a "frozen fish" vac cine. We take the standard vaccine, freeze it instantly in dry ice, and then with a powerful vacuum pump, pull out every particle of moisture and air. This product is called lyo philized vaccine, and will remain just so, like the frozen fish, for a long time. When we want vaccine to admin ister to a calf, we simply add water to the dried bacteria, and in a few seconds they are as lively as ever and can be injected under the skin of the calf for her permanent pro tection against brucellosis. The vaccine comes in two bottles, one containing the dried bacteria, the other containing sterile water to add to the bacteria when needed. In this shape, the vaccine is almost in destructible. It has a "long date"; that is, vaccine sold today will be good until next May or June. It should be stored, until used, in a cool dark place, but does not have to be so carefully refrigerated as did the old vaccine. It is not quite as convenient to use and is more expensive. The water has" to be added to the dried bacteria, and the two thoroughly shaken, before it can be used. It takes a little longer, there are a lot of empty bottles around, a little more bother and fussing, but in the end we have a vaccine that is al ways fresh and carrying a 100 per cent wallop. Both Kinds on Market For quite a while, both types of vaccine will be on the market, but we feel that the new frozen and dried vaccine will eventually replace the old type. With whichever vaccine is handy, the heifer calves should be vacci nated between now and Christmas. This vaccine was developed and proved effective in 1931. We used it extensively from 1933 on, in local herds. It was officially approved by the department of agriculture in 1941, on the completion of long win "iflOK WHO Ï GOING TO COliESE on the money were putting into U.S .Savings Bonds for hîm I Î h ■ vm |£a> 11 l ts " / J. : i * ) I fm ■ i T>-V Æ ■■ 7 ■ ■ J's <■ We started his College Fund a few years back when Jimmy was a baby.
