Which reminds me somehow of
the time the city farmer down the
road borrowed our wheelbarrow.
He used it for several days haulin'
sacks of cement until it broke
down. He brought the remains
back to our place and, instead of
apologizin', he said: "Mr. Parker,
I should think a man of your
standin' in the community would
be ashamed to have such a poor
wheelbarrow to lend to his neigh
bors."

Old Man Hanson who retired and
moved to California a couple of years
ago writes that he is cornin' back
to Montana to live where they have
only one growin' season a year. He
says his wife keeps him gardenin'
the year around down there and he's
plumb in need of a rest.

Bill, our vice president in charge
of cows, isn't sure he can stand
another New Year's celebration of
the kind he's been accustomed to
so he plans to take himself on a
test run Christmas eve. Which
simply means that hell be in
capacitated the last week in 1949
instead of the first week in '50,
and that one P. Parker will be
lookin' after the cows vice versa, so
to speak.

There may be somethin' to the
contention that the female sex is
gettin' stronger and the male is
becomin' more effeminate as the
generations roll. When I was on
the train the other day I saw an
otherwise normal lookin' 200-pound
male siltin' across from me busily
crochetin' a little doily, apparently
not carin' who saw him.

Dogie Johnson has started speakin'
to his banker on the street again.
He's afraid if he has another dry
year he might have to borrow some
money.

One thing that makes me some
what confident about the future of
civilization in this age of the
atomic bomb is the amount of
worryin' that is bein' done about
it. Its the unexpected that usually
happens.

The folks who forecast the kind
of winter we are goin' to have by
the length of fur on the muskrats
we're due for a mild one. But
say
the onion peel boys are sure it's goin'
to be early, cold and long. As for
me, I'm hopin' the muskrat experts
are right but I'm keepin' the oil tank
full and the red flannels handy just
In case.

The motorcyclist, crouched grim
ly over the handlebars, raced up
ward along a mountain trail. The
mountain boy, having never seen
such a sight, ran for his muzzle
loader. Barefooted, he crept out
a rocky precipice and waited.
When the motorcycle popped into
view, far below, the boy aimed and
fired.
"Did youh git th' varmint. Son?"
bis mother called.
"Cain't say. Mom . . . he's still
growlin', but I made 'im let go o'
that man."
