that box to blow the fireplace all over the dining room. The clock was set for 7. The water stopped it at three minutes of." Mrs. North said, 'Three minutes!" And she took my hand and put it to her cheek. Mr. North gripped my arm and said, "Three minutes. Lots of time. What was all the hurry, Tom?" Molly said, "Tom is smart. Show me how you detect, Tom—will you, w Tom?" SO I TOLD HER to get the toaster. I spanked the crumbs out of it. "That's so there'll be no smell of toast," I said. Then I plugged in the cord and pushed the dinkus down. Bread or no bread, did I get re sults! We could hear the Bull Moose snoring upstairs on the rug in front of Molly's door. There came a sud den scramble overhead, and then an avalanch of bulldog thundering down the stairs. There was a skid ding of thick pads on the floor, and he was seated on his .screw propeller by the table. "That punched-back nose has got ten . too much credit," I explained. But there's not a thing the matter with his ears. He has been hearing toast, not smelling it. He heard that bomb ticking, Molly, up inside the chimney. Tick-a, tick-a, tick-a, tick-a, said the toaster softly. Clank! And the lifter sprung. Wurrff!" said the Bull Moose. April fool, Moose!" I said. "There ain't no toast!" "Molly," said Mr. North, "you run out to the kitchen and bring in a couple loaves of bread!" Tests Prove 2,4-D Not Harmful CAREFUL TESTS by competent government and industry research workers indicate that no harmful ef fects to operators, livestock, fish, poultry, or honey bees from the normal use of 2,4-D or 2,4,5-T are to be expected. When 2,4-D was first introduced, a research worker at the University of Chicago ate pure 2,4-D acid, nearly a teaspoon a week for three weeks without any bad effect. Michigan State collège experi ments showed that 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T were harmless to horses, dairy and beef cattle, sheep, swine and chick ens. Rates used on the pasture weed control tests were 2 to 4 times greater than the recommended dosage. Indirect harmful «effects of the use of the herbicides are possible under certain conditions. Sprays have been known to make normally unpalatable weeds attractive to grazing animals. The effect disappears in 24 to 72 hours but if poisonous plants hap pened to be eaten during this time theré could be sickness or death. For this reason, it is wise to keep stock out of pastures containing poisonous weeds for at least 3 or 4 days after spraying. Industry research workers found that the whole body of water in which weeds were growing would have to be made as strong as the spray needed to kill them before it would kill fish. This would be highly improbable because of the great dilution of the spray material generally used as it would hit the water. A Washington experiment station entomologist found that 2,4-D acid is not toxic to bees even though they might visit plants sprayed with the weed chemical for several days before the plants died. Proper management of dairy cows protects the effects of good feeding. Halogeton Can Be Killed With 2,4-D HALOGETON must be killed when first discovered and before the seeds ripen on small patches, if spread of this poisonous range weed is to be stopped, according to University of Idaho experiment station tests re ported in circular No. 117. Small patches may be treated any time. Large patches should be treated in July for best kills. Experi ments on the chemical control of halogeton made in Idaho during 1950 showed that the so-called "heavy esters" of 2,4-D give the fastest kills. The plants tend to die slowly'when the amine forms of 2,4-D are used. The 2,4-D weed killing chemicals are safe to use, non-poisonous and non-explosive. They kill the weed and leave the grasses. The Idaho results indicated that halogeton control requires 2 pounds of 2,4-D per acre. Any spray rate up to 50 gallons of spray solution per acre is satisfactory. Spray a wide area around the patch; don't skimp on the edges. A once-infested area must be watched for several years for halogeton seedlings that may ap pear. Never treat an alfalfa field during the daytime from 7 in the morning until 7 in the evening when it is in bloom, warns T. R. Robb, entomolo gist of the Wyoming Agricultural Extension service. This is the time •pollinating bees are in the field.
