Sprinkler System Makes
Good Farm Better

A SPRINKLER IRRIGATION sys
tem is helping make the good Angus
farm of Ernest Spatzierath, Broad
water county, even better. To him
it means bringing into production an
additional 260 acres of gopd land,
using only 1/3 as much water, elim
inating soil crusting, and being sure
of seed germination, among the many
advantages.
The Spatzierath sprinkler system
is in two identical units. Each one
includes a motor and pump mounted
on a rubber tired trailer. The diesel
motors used develop 38 to 40 h. p.
each. The pumps will develop 34 to
36 pounds pressure. Each system has
a quarter-mile of main line pipe and
a quarter-mile of sprinkler pipe.
There are 32 revolving head type
sprinklers that throw out about 8
gallons per minute.
1 There is another 4-wheel trailer
to haul the pipe from field to field.
The aluminum pipe is in 20-foot sec
tions and because of the light weight,
two sections are moved at a time in
the field without uncoupling. The
sections are hooked together with
no-stoop, quick couplers. One man
can move the pipe down the field to
a new setting in about one hour.
The system was delivered in July
of last year and used on about 360
acres of land. Late irrigation was
given 100 acres of beets and 260

No Crusting. Less Water
According to Spatzierath, there is
no crusting of the soil surface as
with furrow irrigation. And he be
lieves that gravity irrigation would
use three times as much water as the
new sprinkler system uses.
Germination of beets, grain or any
crops on the place is a cinch with
rain when it's needed. About 260
acres of land can now be irrigated
that was beyond the ditches. Irriga
tion water is available the year
around by pumping from the river.
