His neighbors warned him when he moved in that ha could hardly expect to make a living on such a place. In fact, one estimated that be wouldn't stay there more than a year. After only 10 years now, Mr. Spatzierath has modern buildings plus all the farming equipment necessary, includ ing two beet harvesters and two sprinkler systems. His reputation as a producer of good registered Aberdeen Angus breeding. stock has grown each year. And to make the success story even better. Mr. Spat zierath has only been in America for 21 years. He came over to this country just 21 years ago from Ger many. supply ditches, diversion dams, head gates or any of the other headaches connected with a conventional grav ity ditch system. The water is pumped from the Missouri river with a lift of about 15 feet. Better germination of all crops, more efficient water use and easier irrigating are the factors that Ij/lr. Spatzierath thinks will give him his money back within 3 or 4 years. The investment amounts to about $9,000 in the two sprinkler systems with trailers, motors and pumps. Registered Angus The registered Aberdeen-Angus breeding herd consists of 125 cows and this number may be nearly doubled as a result of the extra pas ture available from sprinkler irriga tion. Spatzierath has been running his herd on beet tops and grain stubble for a few months in the fall From about Christmas time to June 1 they are fed hay. Then they are put on irrigated pastures. With the sprinkler systems he thinks that his pastures may be ready for some use a month earlier—by about May 15. Good management practices that have helped build up the farm in clude the use of all barnyard, manure available plus plenty of commercial fertilizers. The commercial fertilizer, 10-20-0, is used on beet fields at 200 pounds to the acre and on alfalfa at 100 pounds per acre. The crop ro tation plan calls for alfalfa, left some times as long as 6 years, then grain, with weed chemicals also taking care of any alfalfa re-growth, and finally, sugar beets are grown up to 3 yean on the same fields. Properly roasted meat is more ten der, shrinks less and retains more of its nutritive vâlue.
