ITH the- brass hats of the
armed services disagreein' so
violently on basic strategy for fight
in' the Korean war, these are very
confusin' times for us arm-chair gen
erals. In the past we could concen
trate on good solid indignation over
the way the commanders were han
dlin' things. But now you can't criti
cize one four-star without findin'
yourself agreein' with another. Livin'
must be a lot simpler in Russia.
There, if you open your yap they
just shoot you and thus cure what
ever mental turmoil you may be

These wet years have just about
convinced the younger generation
of wheatgrowers that there isn't
any hell—in the dry farmin' busi
[ ness. Some of the old boys seem to
be gettin' a little "tetched" loo.
Even Protein Pete had a kind of
hopeful look in his eye the other
day when he was tellin' about
I some tree-ring studies that were
made in western North Dakota
which showed that in the 1600s
there was a stretch of 3S years
when every season brought above
normal moisture. (Somethin' must
have slipped in 1949.)

A Danish agricultural expert says
nervous farmers have nervous pigs.
Any mental disturbance is reflected
in the pigsty. "Keep your temper,
talk friendly to your pigs and caress
them." he advises, contending that
the pigs wiD then do well by you.
He could have added that if it works
you might even try the same thing
<Mi your family.
Martha'« nephew who just grad

for Ehe draft next week. If the
army can teach him to get up in
the meritin' and get to bed at night
he will have what you might call
a well-rounded education.
