to worry her pretty head about prac
tical matters. All she had to do was
the washing and ironing, cooking,
slopping the pigs, feeding the chick
ens and raising the babies. Ladies
were ladies in those days.
Know Their Timing Gears
But back long about 1940 to 1945
came a time when a good many
lassies put on their jeans and
climbed aboard tractors to help pro
duce the food we needed for our
fighting men. Now these lassies
know their horsepower and timing
gears, and when their husbands get
ready to buy a new tractor, they
can speak with authority and dis
crimination about what kind to buy.
But old or young, it's good to see
that at least 75 percent of the farm
families decide together on the pur
chases of machinery. It proves again
that farming is family business. Not
many city wives help their husbands
i buy new adding machines. But farm
wives are partners and help their
husbands pick out their ties and
their tractors.
