LEIPER, Bureau of Reclamation Time of Treatment Best results can be obtained at less cost if treatment is applied be fore the weeds have attained maxi mum growth. Experience has indi cated that most effective and econ omical treatments in the Yellowstone District have been accomplished be tween July 15 and August 10, de pending upon the season. Material Used Aromatic solvents of either coal tar or petroleum origin. are used. From 5 to 10 percent naptha emulsi fier is used depending upon the tem perature of the water. A number of these prepared solvents are on the market, the cost of which varies from $.75 to $1 per gallon. Method of Application A gear or vane pump with capa city of 3 to 5 gallons per minute, powered by a gasoline engine is satisfactory. It should be equipped with an open by-pass system set for best results at about 85 pounds pres sure. The main objectives of applica tion is to secure uniform dispersion over the entire width of the water in the channel. In order to reduce cost of treatment, the flow of the canal and lateral may be reduced to 10 or 20 percent of normal capacity, or enough to just cover the water weeds pravious to treatment. Amount of Solvent to Use (a) For the use of aromatic sol vents of coal tar origin containing a maximum of 2 percent emulsifier of a non-ionic type or 5 percent of a mohogany soap. Apply 4 to 4% gallons of solvent for each cubic foot per second of water flow in the canal or drain being treated. (b) For the use of aromatic sol vents of petroleum origin contain ing a maximum of 2 percent emul sifier of non-ionic type or 5 percent of a mohogany soap, apply 6 to 7 gallons of aromatic solvent for each cubic foot per second of water flow in the canal or drain being treated. (c) A non-ionic type of emulsifier is generally to be preferred to a mohogany soap (petroleum sulpho nates or sodium petroleum sulpho ! nates). The application of the above I amounts are to be dispersed into the 1 water in 30 minutes. A check on the rig delivery may be made by catch ing the volume sprayed into a con tainer in one minute and multiply j the amount by 30. Either the size of orifices in the nozzles, the number of nozzles, or the applied pressure may be altered in order to deliver the required amount in 30 minutes. This concentration will usually be sufficient to treat Vz to %-mile of canal or lateral. Downstrèam sta tions are then set up and only % to % of the amount of solvent applied at the first station is added to the water. The white milky appearance of the first application must be main tained along the entire length of the section of the canal or lateral under treatment. Results Effect of the solvents should be gin to show 12 hours after applica tion. By the end of 24 hours the weeds begin to settle to the bottom of the channel, and in a few days give the appearance of being plas tered to the bottom. They then dis integrate with no offensive odor and break up in such small pieces that no clogging of structures results. In most cases the normal capacity is restored in two to four days aft«* treatment. IRRIGATION SYSTEMS h Vi;::'; -Ï. » • Trade Mark Reg. U. S, PAT. Office. j.
