Ranger McDonald points out hard-pan rangeland near the forest that
had been denuded of valuable perennial grasses by overgrazing. Water
in a bottomless coffee can set into the ground here took a good half-hour
to soak in while the same test on. soif with a good content of organic
material and humus plus a good grass cover took less than 5 seconds.

grades of the Florence-Carlton school, Ravalli county, as they were
shown forest conservation first hand in an all day field trip into
the Bitter Root forest by Ranger Charles McDonald of the Stevens
ville district.

Core boring this giant yellow pine indicated fbe tree was probably
©▼er 300 years old old. Value of such a tree with approximately 3.500
board feet of good lumber was estimated at about $600.

Inefficient loggers had left a 30-inch high stump that could have been
