Ma Stopped to chuckle. "Well,
Mrs. Temple, I took in that fair
from A to Z. I rode on the merry
go-round—not in a seat, but on one
o' them horses. As a youngone,
wa'nt nothin' I loved like a merry
go-round, and I made up my mind
I'd never be no younger.

nudge.
'It's a cooked up job,' sez she.
'You all alone?' she sez, 'well so be

"Well, from that time on, Miss
Weaver and I took in the grounds
together. She was a maiden lady,
it seems. Had no earthly use for the
men folks.
" T thank my lucky stars,' she'd
keep a'sayin! 'that I had the good
sense to stay single.'
Ma took a deep breath and ad
justed her glasses.
"Well, as I was say in', there
wa'nt a thing I missed at the fair.
And with Miss Weaver to talk to,
the time went fast. We rode the
roller coaster and took in all the
sideshows." Ma smiled in happy
reminiscence.
"And do you know Mrs. Temple,
my quilt took a ribbon! I felt right
proud to see how nice it showed up I
with all the others."
Then Ma's face went suddenly
sober.
"WE WAS RIDIN' on the ferris r
wheel," she said, "when John first
spied us. You'd have thought he'd
heard the pop of a gun, the way
his mouth fell open. I made out
I didn't see him, and nudged Miss .
Weaver. "It's my husband," sez I,
"I'm scared as a kitten.
"Miss Weaver snorted. 'Humph,' 1
sez she, 'ain't see the man yet I
I'd be 'scared of. Stand yer
grounds, Mis' Sturgeon,' sez she,
Took him square in the face, and
stand yer grounds.' .
"Well, the music stops about that
time, and the ferris wheel begins
slowin' down. Wa'nt no use pre
tendin' no longer. Miss Weaver and
I steps outa our seats, when it
come our turn, and John Sturgeon
is. right there to meet us.
" 'Em,' he shouts, 'how come you
got here?'
"His mouth falls open, and he
looks me up and down, his eyes
near poppin' outa' his head.
" 'Now where did you get that
dress, Em Sturgeon?'
"I give a quitk gasp and looks
down at the rig I'm wearin'. Miss
Weaver was still standin' by, and
she gives me a nudge that liked
to knocked me over.
"That nudge come just in the
nick o' time. I looks John Sturgeon
square in the face and tries to
keep my voice from shakin'.
"If you want to know what I'm
wearin' John," sez I, "it's the bot
tom Sheet from the tourist cabin,
and my rayon print cut up for
trimmings.
"JOHN'S MOUTH fell open, then
he let out a howl I never see John
quite so tickled.
" 'Em,' sez he, still laughin' and
wipin' his eyes, 'Em, I'd never
thought you had it in you!'
"He eyed me up and down oncet
more, and turns dead sober. 'You
know Emmy,' he sez, 'that white
touched off with your blue and
white print is sure becoming'. Ain't
seen you look so purty and so
young since the kids were little..' "
Ma halted for a moment as a
reminiscent smile played over her
face. Then she glanced at me and
began to chuckle.
Well, John," I sez, as we started
down the road,, "seein' as you like
my outfit so well, you won't mind
payin' the piper. You'll have to
settle for that sheet, John Sturgeon,
when we pay up this evenin."'
