JOHN HOLLAND y K HE SONG, "Peace on Earth to Men of Goodwill," was sung over a world in which slavery was almost universal, women had few rights, monog amy was spotted here and there, there wasn't a hos pital or an old people's home, there wasn't a free school, medical practice was one step removed from the medicine man. ; Into this world a "Baby" was born. Then, things began to happen. Slowly, the common people began to breath a little deeper. Women found more tenderness in their "men." The Missioners of the Cross gathered little groups of converted Jews and Gentiles into churches, trying the new experi ment of living together in the fellowship of love. Collections were taken up to care for the old and disabled. The birth of a girl baby ceased to be re garded as an affliction. We often think of Peace as something that comes mysteriously down from the heavens without any effort or concern on our part. That is a great popular mistake. You will note that if there is to be any peace at all, it must come as a result of "Goodwill" among men. If there is no goodwill there can't be any peace, for peace is a result. Goodwill in our homes will make them Edens of happiness. Goodwill among men of business will tend to co-operative efforts and fair dealings. Good will-in our neighborhoods will bind families into one vast family of helpfulness. Goodwill in the hearts of operators and workers alone can take the bitter ness out of industrial relationships. Goodwill among the people of various churches can produce a har monious forward movement tor good. Goodwill among the leaders of the nations can never come so long as curtains or walls of misunderstanding are allowed to separate us into suspicious groups. Why say "Peace," unless we also practice "good will?" « * BSlipSe a ; ; • i * , ■ f ,.-v>> v \ ' > ■ .- 1 ÜI im , J # ' t ' v t w % M ;> > ; P* ) pL* s s 3 v m ■■ C %■ va • ■ m K mm m A> 5 5s y fefc 1.« r w * <4' Z'f n Y- , ms* 1 ■■ tm ;>> - ' .
