It's these sharp changes in engine temperature that make it important to use an all season motor oil to protect engines every day of the year, in all kinds of weather. Even on mild Winter days Cold"* Starts Can Torture Tractor Engines ES, cold starts on mild winter days, as well as frigid ones, can damage tractor and truck engines . unless these engines are protected by the right motor oil. You see, it's the extremes in engine temperature—from starting to running * heats—that test the performance of a motor oil. Even on a mild day, engine temperatures will rise rapidly more than 100° in a matter of minutes after starting. These extremes require a motor oil that flow$ instantly ... to protect vital engine parts from the first engine turn over. Yet this same motor oil must have the body to resist thinning out at higher running temperatures. Such a motor oil is Phillips 66 Trop-Artic*. This all-season motor Y • • . m ms m •mil ■ *■ Ss? HOWARD WATER MAY BE delivered to irriga tion project lands in one of three meth ods or a combination of three methods. The ideal method is the one that will deliver water to each water user in the project at the time and in the amount that he wishes to do the most efficient job of irrigation. Unfortunately, on many projects and under many systems of delivery there are limiting conditions that make it impossible to deliver water when and in the quantity that each individual water user desires. Often, the supply cannot be regulated to coincide with the de mand of water users either because of a 'limited water source or because the water distribution system is limited in size and cannot deliver all the water wanted, especially during periods of peak demand. Continuous Delivery Under the method of continuous de livery each water user receives his al lotted amount of water as constant flow. This method may serve quite sat isfactorily on large farms with large water allotments. On smaller farms because of smaller size of streams this method can be wasteful of both water and time. Poor coverage is achieved and labor is wasted by having to irri gate with a small head. Continuous water delivery may be advantageous where land to be irrigated is on a steep slope and the soils are extremely erosive. A small head of water would be needed. Steep slopes . with poor penetration would require long runs and small heads. Steep slopes with shallow or light soil would require small constant amounts of water. Small fruit and truck gardening operations under some conditions may also find a constant small head of water delivered continuously an advantage. While this method of water delivery is probably the easiest from the standpoint of proj ect operation, it is definitely wasteful of water. Demand Delivery The demand system of delivery means that water is delivered to the water user when requested. As far as the use. of water on the farm is con cerned, this method is the most effi cient. Its application is limited, how ever, by the nature of the water supply. It may not result in the best use of the available supply because the supply may not always coincide with the de mand. To attempt to construct a distribu tion system that would meet peak de mands would be costly and impractical. To take care of peak demands with a limited distribution system the demand delivery system is usually changed. When the water supply or canal capac ity can't fill all demands, the quantity of water delivered to each user is re duced or the time of water delivery is delayed equitably among water users so as to avoid crop losses due to lack of moisture. Demand systems work best where the water supply is regulated by stor age. They also work best where ad vanced orders are required. The de mand system doesn't work too well where advanced orders are not required and available water supply is wasted. Larger ditches are required in the operation of the demand system and its operation is more complex.
