Many methods are used. Probably the most common procedure is for the borrower to include fertilizer needs when setting up his operating line of credit for the current production J Gar with his bank. Usually these items are paid when the crop is sold. In crops under contract, particularly sugar beets, some companies sell fer tilizers to the farmers they have under contract for use on crops under con tract. The cost of the fertilizer is deducted at the time the grower re ceives his initial payment on the con tract crop. Another procedure used is for the fertilizer dealer, particularly liquid fertilizer dealer, to have the farmer who buys fertilizer sign, at the time of application, a note for the fertilizer. This is payable at harvest time. The dealer, in turn, usually sells this note to the bank where the farmer does business or at the bank where the deal does his financing. Generally the dealer sees the customer's banker or Ins own banker prior to the application. No doubt other procedures for the mechanics of financing fertilizers are used, but these are the most common procedures. er You will notice that I have not men tioned amounts of fertilizer to use per acre, kinds of fertilizers or expected results from the use of fertilizers. This is not the purpose of this article, in the first place, and, secondly, with the ' var ying conditions in Montana and the size of Montana, extreme generaliza tions or recommendations would have to be used and are of little value. In conclusion, I would like to repeat some things already stated and add a new thought or two which will tie this article together. Most bankers realize the importance of. fertilizers and the needs for fer tilizers. They, as well as most opera tors, realize that in the majority of instances, there is need to use more fertilizer to increase production. Inasmuch as agriculture is in a revo lution and the Fittest we are in a Survival of situation, it is important or an operator to use the amount of fertilizer which will do the most good for him. i i n It is most important for the banker and the operators to know their areas, their farms—to have a basic under standing of what the various fertilizers will do under varying conditions, and that fertilizer use is complimentary to other good practices to get maximum production. B V. having the proper knowledge of fertilizers, their proper uses and ap plications, you and your banker can set up a program of financing your fertilizers, tailored to best fit the needs of your operation and which will result in an increase in production at less cost per unit, consequently more profit per unit of production, which is the goal of most operators.
