Erie end Edith Simpsen, Owners
Vertical Integration
(Continued from page 5)
keting has been mentioned as a real
potential in the Northern Great Plains
area.
Dairy Industry. The dairy industry
is already highly integrated. Milk is
produced on a quota system and prices
are regulated through the Montana
Milk Control Board. The uncertainty
caused by poor relationships between
consumers, producers, and processors
may cause further integration in this
industry.
For example, milk processors in
some areas have considered the pos
sibility of consolidating milk produc
tion for their plant on one or possibly
two farms. This could be done by out
right ownership of the farm, or through
contract.
Poultry. The egg business in Mon
tana represents a good example of
the need for integration. The egg pro
ducers of Montana produce a surplus
during the fall and early winter
months. This depresses prices. Then
during the months of June and July
Montana egg production falls off. It
is precisely at this time that the great
est demand for eggs occurs in Montana
largely as a result of the tourist trade
at that time.
During these months suppliers are
forced to go to out-of-state sources to
obtain eggs. Many of the contracts
with out-of-state producers are main
tained on a year-round basis in order
to guarantee a constant supply of a
quality product. This in turn aggra
vates the surplus situation in the fall
and early winter months.
It is obvious that more coordination
is needed in this industry. Perhaps it
can be achieved through vertically in
tegrated arrangements.

A driver got stuck behind a big
semi-trailer truck on the highway
and couldn't pass. What's more, the
truck driver would stop every 4 or
5 miles and bang on the back of his
truck. Finally, after 100 miles of
this, the truck pulled up to a stop
sign and the driver following,
jumped out and ran up to the truck
cab. "Mister, I'm not normally
nosey, but I've been following you
for miles and want to know why
you stop every few miles and bang
on that truck.
"Well, I'll tell you," the truck
driver answered, "I've got a 2-ton
capacity truck here and I'm carry
ing 4 tons of canaries, so I gotta
keep £ ton of them on the wing.
