EACH YEAR the commercialism of
Christmas is criticized. We are urged to
put Christ back into Christmas." But each
year Christmas, as an observance of the
birth of Christ, seems to be pushed even
farther into the background in this annual
rash of presents and parties.
And with the Armegeddon of nuclear
holocaust hanging over our heads, rising
crime rates and acts of violence committed
against members of minority races, one
might wonder what influence the teachings
of Christ have had on humanity these past
1,900 years.
Christ's message was not to the world,
but to the mind and conscience of the in
dividual. It is only in ourselves, as indi
viduals, that we will find evidence of
Christ's teachings.
But if Christ's example to mankind is
limited to the humble simplicity of the
Christmas story, then the significance of
Christmas will be largely lost in a pile of
ribbon and wrappings and cardboard na
tivity scenes.
Christ was humble and kind, yes, but He
also had a righteous wrath, as was demon
strted when he drove the money changers
out of the temple. He had the will to with
stand 40 days and 40 nights of temptation.
He was offered the "kingdoms of the world," j"
but he chose the Kingdom of God. Fear was
not an element of His makeup—-not even ^
the fear of death.
Christmas will be a Christian observance
and the world will reflect the influence of |
Christ's ministry only to the extent that we i
who profess to be Christians follow His |
teachings and example.
