Barley Stripe Mosaic Can
Cause Serious Yield Loss

HOW MUCH DID the disease barley
stripe mosaic cost you this season?
With the above normal rainfall in
many areas yields were high and you
may have felt that no loss resulted.
Yet the chance that you did take a
5 to 10 bushel per acre yield reduction
was quite high.
Compana barley is known to carry
the infection and at one time nearly
one-half of 500 samples tested con
tained the virus. Compana was seeded
on an estimated 1,306,000 acres in 1962.
Compana is not the only variety on
which the disease has been found. The
disease was first identified in 1950 and
has been found in Glacier, Titan,
Betzes and others. Because Compana,
until recent years, was grown on over
90 per cent of our barley acreage the
incidence of disease is bound to be
high.
Barley stripe mosaic is caused by
a seed-borne virus. This little elusive
"bug" is easily transmitted mechan
ically from one plant to another. The
disease is seed-borne, making control
by normal seed treatments ineffective.
The disease will affect spring wheat,
too. The incidence here has been very
low.
Striped Leaves
The symptoms of barley stripe mo
saic in barley are seen as chlorotic
(yellow to light green) flecks which
later develop into the characteristic
striping of the leaves. These stripes
eventually become ash gray to dark
brown and are especially prominent
along the mid-rib and margins of the
leaf.
In some instances, infected plants
may show considerable stunting and
yields are reduced. For the inexperi
enced observer there is danger of
jumping at conclusions. There are other
physiological disturbances which may
create symptoms somewhat similar.
Steps have been instituted to "clean
up" the barley seed stock farmers are
using. Seed stock of disease-free Com
pana was released to a number of
the greatest dish devised by man.
The loafers open up a can and out
of it they dare to scoop some evil
looking, tasteless goop; they plop it
in a soggy crust and then before it's
served they must pile whipped
cream on two inches thick so that
their victims won't get sick when
they force down an extra bite or two
just so they'll be polite.
Thank goodness, I don't get that
swill 'cause good old Jane Mirandy
still knows how to make the real
thing and loves to do it, too, by jing.
She doesn't have a can in sight when
she starts out to do it right; I bring
a punkin from the field and then,
somehow, she makes it yield a tan
talizing golden meat; the taste of
which just can't be beat, especially
when it's mixed up good with lots
of spices like it should, then baked
just right in flaky crust, I eat so
much I almost bust. When it comes
time for me to die, I hope I'm filled
with punkin pie.
certified growers last spring. Seed from
the certified fields will be retested
before being released to growers. Lots
of barley containing in excess of 5 per
cent infection will not be eligible for
resale as certified.
Zero Tolerance
The directors of the Montana Seed
Growers Association, following the rec
ommendation of Experiment Station
personnel, set the 5 per cent limit. Any
foundation seed released now or in
the future must show a zero tolerance.
All certified lots of barley are to be
tested for barley stripe mosaic. The
test requires about six weeks to run.
Only certified seed lots can be tested, as
facilities and personnel are inadequate
for larger scale testing operations.
Seed lots from disease-free stock will
be increased under certification as fast
as possible. To buy seed from a dis
ease-free source can be one of your
best investments.
