MONTANA FARMER-STOCKMAN ADVERTISING BRINGS RESULTS Heavy Replacement Ewes Produce More EWES ENTERING the breeding flock at 100 to 115 pounds produce more lamb and wool than those below these This is the finding of tests conducted by Utah State University. The studies showed that for each additional pound in yearling breeding weight up to 115 pounds there was an increase of ap proximately five pounds total lamb pro duction and .6 pound increase in total wool production throughout the ewe's lifetime. This indicates, the researchers said, that ewes should be permitted to make most of their growth before they enter the breeding flock. Weaning weights of ewe lambs was found to be less important than size at the time of entering the breeding flock. It was found that if ewes have the opportunity to develop adequately, their size at weaning is not a critical factor. However, larger lambs are still preferred, the researchers concluded.
