Bos 2050 hit ö ia SAYS— Electrician? To have or not to have an electrician —that is the question. Yes, that is often the question of the operator of the smaller mine or industrial enter prise. Now that electricians arc scarce we might review the situation without appearing to be plugging for more or less electricians. The modern mine, mill or industrial plant, in general, requires the unified operation of many machines, just as many links are required to form a chain. These several machines may bo driven by small motors or large motors, but* regardless of size, failure of any one motor may cause complete stoppage of production. Now supposing that we have a com petent electrician on the job in of a mill. He is very conscientious about oiling and cleaning motors, keeps the motor starter contact smooth and the starters clean, keeps proper heater elements in the starters, keeps the switch and fuse contacts clean. All of this he does without shutting down the mill, .by being alert and making good use of the time when the mill must be down for relining the ball mill and other repairs and changes. He makes whatever new installations are required in a first class manner and keeps improving and maintaining the complete installation in order to avoid shutdowns. As a result of his careful planning he is seldom bustling around trying to repair breakdowns, and eventually his boss may feel that an electrician can not be justified because there is in sufficient electrical work, this electrician is locking the barn door before the horse is stolen. He is preventing costly breakdowns that to day might result in the permanent shut-down of the mill. Montana Kilowatt is fully aware that this dissection does not answer the question, "To have to not to have an electrician. However, if it has been called to your attention a few points to think about when you answer that question for yourself, a contribution to the war effort may result, because now, more than ever before, we must keep the wheels of production turning.
