Ohio Man Finds
Plenty Crude in
Devonian Lime
The Montana Oil A, Mining Journal
in its continuous preaching is right on
one thing at least, is the finding of an
Ohio Oil Co. man. •
He is E. J. Fredell, formerly superin
tendent of Ohio operations at Shelby,
and he confirms the claim of the
Journal that there is oil in the De
vonian. Leaving Montana following the
sale of Ohio properties to The Texas
Co., Fredell went first to Oregon Basin
where after a few weeks he was pro
moted to take charge of Reed City,
Mich., Ohio Oil operations, where pro
duction comes from the Devonian. Ex
perienced in lime production, Fredell is
"at home" in his new assignment, pro
ducing 44 gravity oil from a depth of
3,600 feet from the equivalent of Madi
son and Devonian limes, with 77 well
making over 11,000 bbls. per day. He
has 70 men in his organization.
"The leases here are very small, com
pared to Montana-Wyoming as" we have
44 separate tank batteries in an area
of around 4,000 acres," he writes.
No Funds to
Diamond Drill
Iron Deposits
At a time when everyone believed
that all was set to daimond drill the
Running Wolf iron ore deposits in the
Little Belt mountains south of Great
Falls, word comes from 8. R. Zimmerly
of the Salt Lake office of USBM that
no funds are available. He writes in a
letter to Montanans, Inc;
"Although we have assembled these
preliminary data, plans for exploration
work by diamond drilling and other
methods are pending allocation of funds
for this work. At the present time no
fund« are available in the western
region for the exploration of the iron
deposits in Montana."
BUT THEY DON'T DRILL WELLS
If investigations would drill oil wells
there would be no worry about ample
crude to win the war. Two investiga
tions have been in full swing in Wash
ington, one by the small business com
mittee and the other is the Lea com
mittee, two congressional investigating
bodies.

ALBERTA OIL NEWS
Wartime Oils, Ltd., has been organ

conduct drilling operations on the west
flank of Turner Valley. The govern
ment will acquire leases and actually
drill the wells, taking the risk of fail

the cost of operation has been fully
recovered, the well and lease will be
returned to the former owner.
Royalties Co., Imperial branch in
Turner Valley, reported an income of
$2,895,000 in 1942, a net profit of $872,

military secrecy, news of construction
of the 400-mile pipeline from Fort Nor
man oil field to Whitehorse on the
Alaskan highway in Yukon, at the
railhead on the Pacific coast, is be

Science Monitor of April 13 carries
three pictures showing the 16-mile port
age at Pelican rapids of the Slave
river. The portage ends at Fort Smith
where the barges were again launched
in the Slave river. The Monitor ac
count, with Calgary dateline, says that
"drilling in some 40 different sections
will be under way this summer . . .
under the auspices of and largely fi
nanced by the United States Army.
The cost will run up into many mil
lions . .
