Pure Oil Has Gas and Condensate
Shows in Important Deep Wildcat
CASPER—Whether the middle of the fabulous Big Horn basin
in northwestern Wyoming will pay off as have the numerous struc
tures around the basinal rim is today a main topic of conversation
Precipitating the discussion are
results of a drill stem test by the
Pure Oil Company in its deep wild
cat on the River or Worland dome,
north of Worland in Washakie
county.
A drill stem test at 7,270 feet, with
the hole 30 feet in the Frontier
sand, resulted in the recovery of a
small amount of 55-gravity conden
sate, plus an estimated wet gas flow
of 5,000,000 feet daily.
The company started this well
with announced plans of testing all
of the horizons normally productive
in this area, presumably including
the Tensleep. In the north end of
the basin, in the Elk Basin field,
there is an interval of about 3,200
feet between the first Frontier and
the Tensleep, indicating this well
will have to go to about 10,000 feet
to reach the Tensleep.
In between are fully half a dozen
IX)$sible producing zones.
Hitherto the center of the basin
has remained undrilled because of
its lack of rock outcrops that might
have given a clue to structural con
ditions, and the presumption that
drilling to great depths would be
necessary to reach possible pay
horizons. On the rim of the basin,
structures are sharply defined.
Many recently brought into produc
tion in deeper zones were accurately
mapped 20 years ago, or earlier.
