Thomson. ' Montana School of Mines, who is - director of the Bureau. * The bulletin Is written by Dr. ' Philip J. Shenon. formerly as sistant profeasor of geology at the Montana School of Mines and . now a member of the staff of tbe U. S. Geological Survey at Wash : ingtoa. D. C. As soon as It * comes from the press it will be ; distributed to the public at a • cost of 60 cents a copy. The areas described in this re port include 30 square miles near Bannack and 20 square miles in the Immediate vicinity of Argen ta. Both districts are located in central Beaverhead county, south Montana, and are famous ■ mining camps, now largely de serted, of the old weat. Because the State Bureau of Mlnee and • Geology believes that the districts contain much valuable ore still and that the deposits can be profitably worked by modern methods, Dr. Shenon has written TOOLE COUNTY By Toole Connty Abotroet Co. One of the interesting features of the oil convention was the talk by Russel V. Johnson, "The Red Qoulee Oil Field" Mr. Johnson is one of the most prominent inde pendent operators of the northwest. He was one of the first authorities on the geology . of th Billing's district and was the first to j outline many of the structures of that region. He is now in independent practice in Calgary, Alberta, representing some of the largest of the Canadian companies. His talk follows: I The general features of the* Red Coulee oil field, or the Bor der field as it is sometimes call ed. are too well known to war rant lengthy and detailed descrip tions. You are familiar with the for mations and structural conditions of tbe Kevln-Snnburst field where production is found on the flanks of a closed field. In the Red Coulee field, no closure has been found toward the south and structural conditions are de fined as a structural nose plung ing toward the north. In the former field the Eagle sand stone and the upper pari of the Benton have been removed by erosion while In the latter field, located as It is on the northwest flank of the Sweetgrass Arch, drilling starts in the Milk River or Eagle sandstone. This ac counts for a difference in struc tural elevation of approximately 1200 feet between the top of the Madison Limestone in tbe two fielde. Stellar Formations Formations in the two fields are similar. The Benton or Col orado approximately 1760 feet, tbe Kootenai 500 feet and the Ellis 150 feet. The Sunburst sand at the base of the Kootenai has been sub-divided Into two productive horizons. The upper member or Vanalta gas sand and the lower member, the Vanalta oil sand. These are separated by a shale member which var ies In thickness from 6 to 85 feet. The upper member is fine grained and the lower one Is coarse grained. This lower sand stone constitutes the basal mem ber of tbe Kootenai series. The second oil horizon lies be low the Sunburst and Is known as the Cosmos sand. The Inter val between these two oil hori zons averages 70 feet In the cen tral part of the field. The El lis-Madlaon contact has not yet been found productive but only a few edge wells or those out side of the proven area have beer drilled Into the Madison. Review Necessary. Tbe foregoing information it probably quite familiar to mo* of you but I believed It necea sary to review It briefly In or der to explain certain structura' conditions which have been rs cently noted, as a a result of de velopment on the east side of tie field in Alberta. 1 The contour t surface structural conditions revealed by auch outcrops as can be found In the area north of tlfe boundary. Mach of It is obscu» ed by glacial drift but at tl^ time this map was compiled k was believed to represent tnp structural conditions. Second Fold Indicated The log of tbe Sax well indi cates the apparent existence bf a second fold to tbe east of tie Red Coatee field. Tbe extent of this fold is g>t definitely established since ko wells have been drilled to tie eastward bnt additional evident from east flank wells indicate«a shallow, northward plunging en cline between the Sax well the east flank wells. f The main problem in tbe derf opment of the Red Coulee fli d appears to be In the correlati n of well samples. GREAT PALU, sufficient attention has given to this phase of the work since its Importance has only re cently been recognised. It is quite apparent from an examination of well records that the different members of the Kootenai and Ellis vary greatly in thickness, texture and other physical characteristics. As an example, the thickness of the Sunburst sand varies from 8 ft to «5 feet. This may be due to a tbicknenlng of the sand itself, or the absence of the Shale member which separates the upper hort ton from the lower. The absence of certain red shale members In various wells is also confusing. Two, three or four "red beds" of varying thickness may be found In the Kootenai proving the lenticular nature of these been markers. Water Bands Aid The water sands In Khe field are of great assistance in cor relation. The surface water oc curs in the (basal member of the Milk River or Vlrgelle sand stone immediately above the con tact with the Benton. The second is found In the upper member of the Biackleaf series which rep resents the lower part of the Benton shale. The third and most persistent water hprison Is locally termed tbe 1900 foot water sand. This occurs Just above the base of the Benton shale and is found over the en-, tire field but at slightly varying depths dependent, of coarse, upon tbe location on the structure. Those wells on the flanks and the east side syncline bave found water In the lower Sun burst sand and occasional show ings of oil. The Bllls-Madlson ontact shows the greatest amount of water in all wells which have been drilled to the lime. The Sunburst sand and Elll»-Madl son contact are distinctly sulphur water. Formations Differ There is also a marked differ ence In the character of bhe lower Bills which is In contact with tbe Madison limestone. Some wells show a thick, coarse mem ber which is quite lenticular, and few wells show a gray compact shale in contact with the lime. The Sunburst «and and Bills-j Madison contact are distinctly sulphur water. There is also a marked differ ence In the character of the low ) er Ellis which is in contact with the Madison limestone. Some wells show a thick, coarse sand member which is quite lenticular, and a few wells show a gray com pact shale In contact wltto the lime. This condition la, of coarse, attributed to an eroslonai unconformity similar to that ex isting In tbe Sunburst field. JWwMdsate Explained Apparent discordance In any correlation of sub-surface In formation may be due to one or more of several factors. Those which would have a direct in fluence upon any positive inter pretation of stuctnral conditions are as follows:— 1. Faulty sampling. 2. Leasing out of various members. 3. Tightening of beds. 4. Crooked holes. Sampling Kserntial I am sure you win agree that careful sampling of the forma tions drilled In any well, even In a prove* field. Is essential. While ft is obvious that commercial production is tbe objective. It la surely necessary that in an area auch as Bed Coulee, where oil (Continned on Page Sight) 8E0R9E S.
