♦ POLITICAL SECTION ♦ •y-; ra y FRANK A. HAZELBAKER It was 36 years ago that Prank A. Hazelbaker, now lieu tenant-governor of Montana and republican nominee for governor, left Kansas in answer to the call of the West. He located at Dillon, and Beaverhead county has proudly claimed him as a citizen ever since. One of the earliest students to enroll in the Montana State Normal College, he afterwards taught school for a time, later engaging in mercantile pursuits in the Big Hole basin. He then became interested in the real estate and insurance busi ness, building up what is now one of the outstanding firms of its kind in Montana. He operates an extensive stock ranch in the Big Hole basin, on which was grown two years ago the hay that won the world's championship at the inter national show in Chicago. His entry into politics was made in 1904, when he was elected clerk of the district court of Beaverhead county. In the same year he was made secretary of the republican state convention and served in that capacity every convention un til the advent of the primary election. For three terms he was secretary of the state central committee of his party, and for one term, its chairman. In 1920 he was elected state senator from Beaverhead county and four years later was re-elected without opposition. He was one of the recognized leaders in the upper house of the legislature. Four years ago he was elected by a huge popular vote to the office of lieutenant-governor. His splendid work as presiding officer of the senate won him the respect and sincere admiration of all mmebers, republicans and democrats alike. In 1915 Mr. Hazelbaker promoted and took charge of the Montana exhibits at the Panama-Pacific International Ex position in San Francisco, and during the past several years has actively assisted in Montana's agricultural representa tion at the International Hay and Grain show in Chicago, where this state has attracted world-wide attenton by its re markable prize winnings. As secretary of the Beaverhead Madison Stockgrowers association, he has taken a leading part in the development of that industry in southwestern Montana. Mrs. Hazelbaker was, before her marriage, Lois Brown Brantly, daughter of the late Chief Justice and Mrs. Theo dore Brantly. They have three children, Frank, Jr., Lois and Theodore Brantly Hazelbaker. Probably no one in Montana enjoys a wider personal ac quaintance throughout the state than Leutenant-Governor Hazelbaker, and certainly no one is more familiar with every section of Montana and its particular problems.
