RODGER and GERTRUDE RODGER, I »efendant - To be sol«l at Sheriff's Sale on the 8th day of December, A. D. 1932. at 2 o'clock P. M., at the front «loor of the Silver Bow County Court I », City of Butte, County EDITH BERKMAN IS RELEASED : BOSTON—(F.P.)—Edith Berkman, who has been held for deportation for many months because of her tex tile strike activities, has been leased. She has been suffering from tu berculosis and her illness apparently was either aggravated seriously by her imprisonment or caused by it, since she was able to work hard and effectively for the National Textile Workers Union before she was jailed. Secretary of Labor William N. Doak, who has become nationally no torious for holding prisoners months on the chance he might be able to deport them eventually, had ordered Miss Berkman held since she led a textile strike in New England last spring. Every effort has been made by the International Labor Defense and the American Civil Liberties Union to bring about her release so that she might be taken care of by her friends, but to no avail until just before election. It is believed that constant exposure of Doak's rec ord has caused a temporary soften ing of his bitter labor-hating atti tude. In the New England district he is ably seconded by Mrs. Anna C. M. Tillinghast, immigration commission er, who makes no effort to conceal the fact she considers her job as a strike-breaking job. She told Prof. Colston E. Warne of Amherst Col lege that she was only "jailing strike leaders" for deportation. Her tactics in the past have been to hold the leaders in jail until the strike was broken, then release them. But she and Doak became furious over the efforts to force Miss Berkman's re lease, and held her for months. Miss Berkman has been sent to a sanitarium to recover from the ef fects of the "Doak cure." re D. Baker Admits 'Great Drifting Mass' of Homeless Waifs ❖ NEW YORK—(F.P.)—"One of the most disturbing by-products of the depression is the great drifting mass of human beings who are now roam ing the highways and by-ways of our nation searching for a foothold somewhere," admits Newtcn Baker, chairman of the Welfare and Relief Mobilization, in making public a report on America's homeless chil dren. Picturing the transients as a new class of wanderers, the report goes on to describe various groups among them who have taken to the road since the depression, in the faint hope of finding work. "Whereas a considerable number are boys under 20 years of age," comments the re port, "one finds also in their ranks expectant mothers, sick babies, young childless couples and grim-faced mid dle-aged men and women dislodged from lifetime jobs. They present a tremendous problem to the nation and to the communities through which they pass. Hitch-hiking, rid ing the rods, sleeping in missions, municipal lodges and temporary shel ters, swelling breadlines everywhere, they are found in all parts of the country, and the question of how to deal with them effectively becomes a national one. Children who re member no home and have never been in school because their parents have been constantly on the move, are among this number, as well as others who because of unemploy ments have been uprooted from com fortable homes and schools where they were leading normal happy lives. "Not only are the numbers of transients increasing each month," comments the report, "but their prob lem has become more acute and dif ficult because towns and cities are of Silver Bow, State of Montana, the fol lowing described real property, to-wlt: Lot numbered Seven (7), In Block num bered Four (4) of the Carte Blanche Ad dition to the City of Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana, according to the official file and plat and survey thereof now •cord In the office of the County Clerk an«l Recorder of Silver Bow County, Montana; and the tenements, heredita ments and appurtenances thereof. FABRICATED HOMES AGAIN THREATENING BUILDING INDUSTRY WASHINGTON, D. C.—The en gineering department of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association has completed plans for a five-room, one-story dwelling, 24x36, composed of 160 fabricated sections. These plans are now under advisory con sideration as to their practicability and probable popularity by a dozen representative lumber retailers and as many manufacturers. The plans are so worked out that the parts can be built in any retail yard or millwork plant which has the necessary facilities. Erection of the house consists merely in as sembling the sections on the build I ing site. The framework is not 1 segregated from the walls; in other words the house is literally built up from blocks. The sections or panels are completely equipped with doors, window screens, blinds and other accessories. The exterior finish may be of sid ing, shingles or stucco; and the porch and cornice work and finished floor are to be applied subsequent to as sembly of the panels. The dwelling will have no base ment, but a heater room with a fuel storage space is provided on a level about two feet below an open ing off the kitchen. If hot water heat is preferred the panels will provide for concealed radiators. The cost of this manufactured dwelling is estimated at about $2,600. _ $5 and Up!
