88-Year-Old Artist Is Visitor In Lodge Grass Lodge Grass. —A competitor of Grandma Moses is 88-year-old Mrs. M. M. Saunders of Kansas City, Mo., who is again spending the summer in Lodge Grass at the home of her neice, Mrs. R. E. Ha worth. When asked how she happened to get started in oil painting Mrs. Saunders said, “I always liked to paint but I never took a lesson until I was past 80 years old, when I was looking for something to occupy my time.” As far back as 1914 Mrs. Saun ders painted dishes. ‘Tve never painted to sell yet,” she said, “just for the fun of it, and X have given away most of my paintings to relatives and friends.” Since she turned to oil painting she says her favorite subject is landscapes but she also paints floral pictures. She especially likes to paint sunsets and several of her relatives have sunset paintings she has made. Her latest sunset picture is for a special, occasion. Not long ago her only grandson remarked, “Grandma I wish you would paint me a sunset some day.” The young man, age 13, is having a birthday July 29., and Grandma has her present completed and ready to deliver. She makes her home with her daughter. Besides her hobby of painting Mrs. Saunders is an accomplished seamstress and spends a great deal of time making clothes for relatives. A portion of her visit in this part of the country will be spent in Sheridan at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Yager, and family. Seven Examined at Well-Child Clinic Lodge Grass. —Seven pre-school children were examined at the so cial room of the Little Brown church July 11 by Dr. B. K. Kil bourne and Miss Christine Heiser district helath officers. The den tal nurse from Crow Agency also visited the clinic. Preparations for the clinic were made by Mrs. O. J. Landon, local chairman. Assisting with the work were Mrs. Paul Bradley of the American Legion Auxiliary; Mrs. Ralph Metcalfe, representing the Lodge Grass Home Demonstration club, and Mrs. John Noblett, re presenting the Little Hom Home Demonstration club. The next clinic in Lodge Grass is scheduled for August 8. SHOTS TO BE GIVEN Lodge Grass. —The second polio shots are to be given in the high school gym in Lodge Grass July 21. Those who have not had the first shots and have the signed slips may get their first shots at that time also. A later date will then be set for their second shots. Additional Faculty Members Listed For Coming Term Lodge Grass. —All grade school teachers have now been hired for the Lodge Grass schools, officials have announced. A vacancy re mains in a rural school, that of Corral creek. Teachers hired in the grades re cently include Miss Betty Jo Mur phy of Roy, Mont., fourth grade. She is a graduate of Eastern Mon tana College of Education in Bil lings. Mrs. Rose Marie Lewis of Sheri dan, Wyo., will teach the combin ation fifth and sixth grade room. She attended Sheridan Community college and has been teaching in Wyoming. Miss Gunda Volda who’s home is at Two Dot, will teach sixth grade. She is a graduate of Eas tern Montana College of Educa tion in Billings and has been teaching in Columbus. Donald Irwin of Wolf Point will teach seventh grade this year. He is a graduate of Northern Mon tana College of Education in Havre and is at the present time working on his degree at EMCE in Billings. With the hiring of two teachers recently in the high school de partment there remains only one vacancy to be filled. Edwin Goyette will teach mlth matics this year. His home is at Cascade. He is a graduate of Montana State university, Missoula, and is attending summer school there this year, working on his masters degree. He is married and has two children. Mrs. Helen Allen, former com mercial teacher at Harlem, will teach commercial subjects here this year. She is formerly of Lo cust Grove, Okla. Churches Sponsor Vacation School Lodge Grass. — Vacation Bible school opened in the Little Brown church July 11. The project is sponsored by the Little Brown church and the Chivers Memorial church with classes being held in the Little Brown Church. Hours are from 9:30 until 11:30 daily except Sunday for the next two weeks. Teachers for the different classes are Mrs. S. T. Eggart, Mrs. Ben Brazier, Mrs. Scott Curry, Miss Norita Clanin. Miss Thelma Met calfe, Mrs. Donald Murdock and the Rev. and Mrs. H. S. Benson. K SPEAKS IN WASHINGTON Lodge Grass. —Mrs. W. A. Pet zoldt recently returned from Ta coma, Wash., where she addressed a group of over 200 women at the Baptist women’s house party for Western Washington. She plans to leave Lodge Grass again next week for Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where she will address the Eastern Washington Baptist wo men’s house party. Her grand-daughter, Miss Patsy Fitzgerald will accompany her on the second trip. Great Falls Breweries, Inc. Great Falls, Mont. Lodge Grass Briefs A committee meeting of the Y.BA. was held in the parsonage of the Little Brown church Fri day at 7:30 pun. Those attending were Uhl Bond, Mrs. Pete Miklo vich, Mrs. Mabel Ball and the Rev. H. S. Benson. Plans for introduc ing the year Baptist achievement program into the church work this fall were worked out. Next planned meeting is set for July 29th, at the parsonage. Pat Nichols, mayor of Lodge Grass, who has been confined to a hospital in Billings for the past week, was dismissed Saturday. He will remain in Billings several days before returning to Lodge Grass. Mr. and Mrs. Rollie Harris and Mrs. Harris’ mother, all of Bil lings, spent the week end of July 4 at the Jim Crowe home. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Halepeska arrived in Lodge Grass Saturday to visit Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Ha worth. Mr. Halepeska is station agent for the Northern Pacific at Forsyth and is now on vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Smith and sons and Mrs. Smith’s father, Howard Keithler, spent July 3 in Miles City with Mrs. Keithler, who is employed this summer at a ranch near there. Mr. and Mrs. William Frushour of Lucerne, Ind., arrived here last week to visit Mr. and Mrs. Errett Moyer. The group motored to Bil lings where Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moyer joined the group and all toured Yellowstone park. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Griffin and three sons of Gardenia, Cal., visit ed recently in Lodge Grass with Mr. and Mrs. Jess Faught and Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Knutson and families. Mr. Griffin, Mr. Faught and Mr. Knutson were buddies in the U.S. armed ser vices. Mr. and Mrs. Camiel Pattyn and family of California arrived in Lodge Grass the last of the week. They will visit relatives in Lodge Grass, Hardin and Billings. July 10 a family picnic was held near Spear Siding. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Edwards and son stopped in Lodge Grass last week to visit her sister and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Faught. They were enroute to Gillette, Wyo. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Donahoe of Luther spent the last week at the George Gibson home on Lodge Grass creek. Mrs. Anna Warner, aunt of Jay Fitzgerald, is visiting at the Fitz gerald home. After her visit here she expects to visit relatives in Chinook before returning to her home. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Harris and children of Colorado Springs, Colo., are spending their vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Givens in Dayton and with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Givens in the Wolf mountains. Mrs. Arnold’s son, Ar len Whiteman, who had been vis iting them in California since his graduation here this spring, re turned with her. Mrs. Cecil Milne and son. Bob, of Malta, are visiting with her mother, Mrs. Martha Chatham and her sisters in Lodge Grass. She timed her visit to be here for the wedding of her neice, Miss Shirley Green to Don Per kins on July 9.
