The bag and possession limit will be one bird. Either rifles, shotguns or bow and arrows may be used. The department has announced that approximately 500 turkeys will be present in the area open to hunting and it is highly desirable to give Montanans an opportunity to pursue one of the nation’s top game birds. Department authorities advised potential hunters that this species is one of the most wary of game birds and that hunter success is apt to be low. In South Dakota, under similar “first hunt” conditions, hun ter success was approximately 20 per cent. The Longplnes area is a plateau region in Carter county and ap proximately one half of the turkey range will be open to hunting, the remaining being closed to offer sanctuary to a portion of the birds. The department plans to trap and transplant birds in the area again this winter. Five checking stations will be op erated on the roads into the area and detailed area maps will be dis tributed to hunters so that they may be certain of the open hunting region. Department personnel ex pect to maintain very close obser vation on the results of this first turkey hunt as it will set guide lines for future hunts of this spe cies in Montana. — « Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered bv failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, cecause t;iev ive in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. —Theodore Roos evelt. /’ / ’ t /f' I /w U: km // Vil / At harvest'time take a look at next year ... a low cost Land Bank Loan can give you adequate investment capital to bring even greater profits next year!
