THE MONTANA POWER COMPANY Classification of State Streams to Aid Water Planning A Montana stream fisheries class ification has been prepared. It Is being distributed to interested agencies as an aid in comprehensive planning for the use of the state’s water resources. The streams of Montana are classified on the basis of their worth to recreational fishing. Four hund red thirty-six streams or parts of streams totaling 8,923 stream miles were placed in the top four classes, j Four hundred ten miles of streams including sections of the Big Hole Madison, Missouri, West Gallatin' and Yellowstone rivers, and Rock Creek, east of Missoula, were placed in Class 1. These were classed as blue ribbon streams of national as well as state wide value. One thousand seventy-two miles were Class n, streams of state wide value. 2,437 miles were in Class HI, streams of value so large dis tricts of the state, and 5,004 miles were in Class IV, streams of value to smaller districts such a count ies. All remaining streams Including those not yet classified as well as those restricted to local value were placed, in Class V. Although Montana Is well en cfowed with trout streams when compared to other states, the class ification clearly emphasizes that even Montana fishing streams are limited in both quantity and quality. The popular conception that there are 20 to 30 thousand miles of “well stocked streams” in Montana is dangerously misleading in that it has given rise to a false sense of security in conservation of stream fisheries. Classification was based on the following factors: (1) Availibillty, or in other words, is the stream open to the public and reached by road: (2j aesthetics including such values as natural beauty and clean water; (3) use of fishing pressure, and (4) productivity. Just as certain farm lands produce far more crops than others, so certain waters are capable of producing ipuch greater crops of desirable fish. The classification was prepared mainly for use in water resource planning and fisheries management. It will also be of value to those concerned with other development programs and to fishermen. It was prepared by a stream classification committee composed of represent atives of the Montana Fish and Game department, the Montana State college and the Missouri River Basin studies of the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife. The extent and distribution of each of the five stream classes as well as the classification of in dividual streams is shown on a map on the reverse of the class ification. As the demand for recreational fishing increases so will the value of many streams Revisions will then be in order from time to time. Tax dollars support 102328 gov. emments in the United States. Be sides federal and state they include counties, municipalities, townships, special district and school districts.
