NEWS OF THE WEEK Reuben G. Fenton, former governor of New York, is dead. The Apaches are raiding along the Mexican side of the border. An unknown tramp was killed while riding on a brake beam of a freight train near Curlew, Dakota. About $14,000 worth of counterfeit beer stamps have been seized in New York and this is but a fraction of what have been used. General Middleton and lion. Adolphe II. Caron, Canadian minister of militia and defense, have been gazetted asknigbts commander of the order of St. Michael and St. George. A late fight between a detachment of cavalry and Geronimo's band of Apaches resulted in the capture of the camp, the killing of several Indians and the wound ing of Geronimo who escaped. Dr. H. P. Lynch ©f Sturgis, Black Hills, was shot and instantly killed in his drug store by an unknown person. The deed is believed to have been done by a saldier who was jealous of Lynch over a woman. A crematory was lately blown down on Long Island N. Y. and the members of the negro church near by, who have long prayed for the Lord to demolish it, now believe that their prayers have been answered. The Indians on Fort Totten reservation, Devil's Lake, will harvest 60,000 bushels of wheat this year. It will be tlireshed by a steam traction engine and thresher, ground into flour at the agency mill and credited to them at $2 per hundred pounds. The census returns of Minnesota show the population of the state to be 1,118,486. The United States census, taken in 1880, gave the state a population of 780,783. During the five years elapsing since that time there has been a gam of 337,713, or 481 per cent. The heaviest gains are in St. Paul. Minneapolis and Duluth. General Phil Sheridan has been given a name by the Indians which, abbreviated, seems likely to follow him through life. During his recent visit to the far west the Indians dubbed him "The-Chunkey-Man who-Mcans-Business.'' The soldiers have condensed it, and now little Phil is known in army circles us '-Old-Chunkey Biz." The United States Consul at Sierre Leone has sent a dispatch to Secretary Bayard giving information of the movement of an army of 100,000 men in the interior of Africa. About five years ago a Mandingo negro named Samudu, a Mahommedan, was seized with one of the fancied heaven ly inspirations, so peculiar to that religion, and believed that he was ordered to sup press paganism in Africa and to open the roads from the interior to the coast which have long beon controlled by vagabond tribes who levied blackmail on travelers. Since the conception of his idea he has raised an army of 100,000 foot and horse and is carrying out his plans very fully and rapidly. There is much excitement in criminal circles over the death of Hou. J. R. Wal kup at Emporia, Kas., with symptoms of poisoning and the arrest of his child-wife for the crime. Walkup was 45 years of age and his wife 17 years, younger than her husband's two daughters by his first wife. They were from New Orleans and were married a month ago. The husband had business at Emporia and took his bride with him. Also of the party was Willie Willis, a relative, early playmate and close friend of Mrs. Walkup, only a few months older than her, whom Mr. Walkup had promised to provide for. The believers in Mrs. Walkup's crime say that Willie was her lover. She was known to have purchased arsenic but says she used it as a cosmetic. That there was arsenic in the husband's stomach has not been fully established. Delegates to the River Convention. Gov. The Kansas State Agricultural College has been engaged in an experiment, con ducted for the purpose of determining the value of alfalfa as a food for hogs. It is said to form excellent pasturage for hogs, and furnishes a feed that is liked. It is claimed for it that the quality of the flesh produced by this green food is really worth more, pound for pound, than that produced by the grains. It is believed that an acre of alfalfa, fed off in its grow ing state to hogs, will produce more pork than can he produced from an acre of grain requiring much labor in its pro duction. It is claimed on good authority, that within the next two months 10,000 white men will he discharged from the line of the Canadian Pacific. The discharging has already been commenced.
