MONTANA NEWS. The Maydy company's clothing store at Helena has been closed under attach ments amounting to 817,000. The democrats of Fergus county now have an organ, having purchased the Lewistown Republican on Saturday last. The county clerk's return of the equalized assessment of Yellowstone, makes the total real estate and improve ments, 82,090,32-1, personal property 81, 999,203. The two year-old filly. Lady Wilton, owned by Branslield of Lexington, Ken tucky, has been purchased by Marcus Daly of Anaconda. The purchase price is said to have been 810,000. The Boston and Montana Consolidated Copper and Silver Mining company has just declared a dividend of 81.50 per share, which, on 8125,000 shares, makes 8187,500. This is virtually a quarterly dividend. »Steve Mattier, alias "Arizona Kid," who shot and killed August Turner at Garrison on the 6th of August in a dis pute over the price of a meal, has been found guilty of murder in the second degree. The jury recommend a sen tence of imprisonment for life. A new trial was asked for by Mattlers attor j • j ! : Thugs and thieves infested Miles City during the races last week. I. Orschel & Co's, store was broken into and some wearing apparel stolen. R. J. Campbell was sandbagged and robbed of his gold watch and chain and - his small change. One of the boys who delivers the daily pa per was also relieved of his watch. The police succeeded in capturing the thugs and have found some of the stolen property on their persons. Fort Benton Review: J. B. Tracy in forms us that the Homeland Cattle com pany have shipped 387 cars of cattle from Culbertson this season and will ship 187 more. Nineteen cars were shipped last Monday and four more trains will be shipped before next Mon day. At present there are 380 stock cars ordered between Culbertson and Great Falls. Who can dispute that this is the finest stock country in the world? A Great Falls dispatch of the 13th says: The now scale of wages was in augurated this morning, 82.50 being fixed as the minimum rate. The ad vance was refused at the 13. & M. works, the dam and at the Union smelter. Thereupon 500 men quit work. The smelter asked for the protection of the sheriir and the state militia, a request silly in the extreme, as there was not even an approach to violence. The men are quiet, but firm and hopeful. j ' at at to ly A fire at Miles City Tuesday evening destroyed a section of the box stalls re cently erected at the race track. The race horse Chico, confined in one of the stalls, had succeeded in kicking his way out and escaped with slight injury. A work mare belonging to the owner of Chico and a dog were incinerated. The fire was of incendiary origin, and is supposed to have been set with a view to ruining the race horse Chico, or through malice against the association. The loss is about 85(X). Gazette: A mail pouch was lost or stolen from a coach on the Billings & Benton stage line last August and was found near Lavinu Tuesday by Supt. J. J. Davis and sent to the Billings office its proper destination. The sack was cut open and the contents had been hastily looked over, apparently, and j then replaced in the sack as nothing ] can be traced as lost. That the sack was stolen for the purpose of robbery is evidenced by a registered package hav ing been opened. A check was in the package, which was addressed to Louis Fenske, and it was carefully replaced. Husbandman: One of the biggest finds yet reported in the Castle moun tains has recently been made at Four mile, between the location of the King of the Castles and the Columbia. A tunnel was run in through a mass of iron and an immense body of high grade galena exposed. There is considerable excitement over this find for two rea sons, first, that it is in the granite, and second, that it is on the White Sulphur Springs slope of the Castles, and gives assurance that the mineral belt extends around the northern slope fully as strong as on the southern declivity. The annual report of the commis sioner of the general land office contains a long communication from the surveyor general of Montana, in which he urges the survey of a large tract along Clark's fork of the Columbia river. The inter ests of the government, as well as of the settler, demand that this be sur veyt-d as soon as practicable. The sur veys in Montana for the year have been ... 620,161 acres. The business of the land offices is as follows: Bozeman office, 811 entries, 86179 acres, sold for 870,775; Helena office, 1,663 entries, 362,192 acres, sold for 8223,280; Miles City office, 276 entries, 33,1-14 acres, sold for 85,097. j I j I a j * Mining Review: It is reported that a party of civil engineers are making a preliminary survey for the purpose of ascertaining the feasibility of construct ing a railroad from Three Forks to Cas tle; and in connection with the report it is said that the Anaconda company has decided to erect extensive smelting and refining works at Three Forks, and that operations in that direction will be gin at ah ea ly day. It is surmised that the surveyors are in the employ of the Union Pacific company, which contem plates extending its line from Butte to Three Forks and so on to the rich and extensive carbonate mines in the Castle mountains. The case of E. A. Kenney, state audi tor, vs. H. C. Kessler, treasurer of Silver Bow county, came up for hearing before Judge McIIatton at Butte Saturday. It has been the practice of Mr. Kessler to take the commission allowed him by law out of the state taxes collected by him before remitting to the state treas urer. The state claims that he is en titled to no fee for collecting state taxes, and accordingly sues to recover the commissions collected by Mr. Kessler. The case is of interest to every county in the state as it will be made a test and carried through the courts in order that the law upon that subject may be given authoritative construction. Ow ing to its importance Judge McIIatton will take some time in preparing his decision. jAi Missoula Friday morning last a teamster hauling slabs to the electric j ! I I ; I ! j 1 ; a light works noticed a man lying on his j face under the north approach to Mis sou la bridge. Examination revealed the ! fact that the body was that of an In-i dian and from all appearances was dead. ; The coroner at once summoned a jury | j who carried him out and had him j • brought to the undertaker's. From ! j other Indians who saw him it is learned his name is Samuel, a Pend'Oreille, j ! who was a witness in the case of : the Indians now in jail for horse steal-j ing. When found the body was quite warm, showing that he had not been dead long. At the feet of the body a broken beer bottle, that had contained I whisky, was found. Mr. Dougan, the ! miller, says that he saw the Indian on ; the previous night lying on a plank near j the electric light works, and the engin- ! eer at the works says that he came in ,, j ■ . there and made signs, putting his bands | to his head and stomach, as though in pain, but the engineer could not under stand him. The supposition is that the dead man w as sick, and after getting hold of the whisky he drank enough to kill him. A. Helena dispatch of the 10th says: A large number of Knights of Pythias of this place are looking for one George J. Crane. He enrolled nearly 2,300 of them in the Pythian Life association of Omaha, Neb., and they have since learn ed sufficient of the organization to know that it is no good, and that they have been duped. Several thousand dollars were secured by Crane for policies. Neither the supreme lodge nor the supreme lodge of Nebraska recognizes the association. E. S. French, a prom inent member of the order, charged Crane with misrepresenting himself and compelled him to refund $26 he had sec ured for a policy. This was done on a threat to expose him. French promised to keep quiet and today Crane left the city. He told some parties he was go ing to Butte. At the hotel he said he was going to Missoula. He was very successful at Livingston and Bozeman before coming here. Attorney Shrop shire of the Union Pacific, with an office at Butte, Crane says is the association's attorney. Many prominent citizens of this place are interested, as they have given notes to be redeemed when the policies are received by them. Crane has sold many of the notes to a banker at a discount. I & ,|; ! I I j ] BED LODGE NOTES. [From the Picket.] Frank Doran, an employe of the Rocky Fork Coal company, had the misfortune to get two lingers of his right hand bad ly mashed in the mines Tuesday. The stage line between Corbot and Lovel, Wyo., has been sub contracted by the agent and a stage will bo run week ly between these points carrying pas sengers and express. Ed. Galligher was out among the peo ple 1 uesday to raise some money for charitable purposes. He succeeded in raising 8140 in a.short time. The people of Red Lodge are noted for their liber ality and kind-heartedness. According to the official returns from the census bureau Red Lodge has a population of twelve hundred inhabit ants. This gives the coal metropolis two hundred and fifty more inhabitants than Miles City. Dr. W. A. Allen and son of Billings and James S. Bateman of Red Lodge are highly elated over some mining properties that they recently secured j seven miles this side of Cooke City, in I the New World mining district. On j their prospecting tour last week they I located the Mollie Allen and the Whip porwill Lodes. The ore is free milling, runs fifteen dollars per ton from the grass roots, and the leads of both claims are twenty feet wide and well defined. We hope there may be millions in the rich find. A of as CASTL.K KOTES. fFrom the Reporter.] Mr. H. H. Barnes brought home from his placer mine diggings some fine spec imens of Montana sapphires and gold nuggets. The Etta people are busy this week erecting a shaft house and preparing for the winter. The Etta is showing up befter every day and is bound to prove a bonanza to its owners. The people of Castle have plainly heard the whistles at both the Iron Chief and California mines the present week. Both these companies now have their steam hoists in fine working order. J. J. Bonner, superintendent of the Judge, was in Castle Friday. Mr. Bon ner informs us that the steam hoist was started up last Tuesday and works like a charm. The Judge is looking better as each foot in depth is gained. I he Little Dot's annual election oc curred last evening with the following result: J. M. Kumpe, president; N. E. j Benson, vice president; Mrs. Dottie Lakel, secretary and treasurer. Direct ors—Mrs. Dottie Lakel, J. A. Fitzpat rick, N. E. Benson, J. M. Kumpe and Ben Gardner. The cold weather has only revived Castles builders and new buildings are j daily spring up in all parts of our city. At the present time more buildings are ! being erected than at any other period I during the existence of our prosperous I city, and had we the lumber a large ; number of residences would be erected I this fall, but will be compelled to wait ! till spring when, it is hoped, our saw j mills will be able to cope with the enter 1 gency. «Justice to the Soldier. Washington special: No session of congress since the close of the war has been characterized by more general or ; more beneficent pension legislation than the first session of the fifty-first con gress.
