Huge Grizzly Mauls and Kills Man;
Ranger Battles Four Tough Bears

Joseph Duret was mauled and killed .
on Slough creek, near the Yellowstone
national park, by a large grimly bear
in 1922. Duret, or Frenchy, as he was 1
called by many who knew him well,
lived within two miles of the Slough
creek ranger station. His death reran,
ah incident frhich occurred at the
Slough creek ranger station in 1917,
which Involved the killing of four
grizzlies in almost as many minutes by
Ranger John Friend.
Greeted by Grizzlies
“Ranger Friend was making his first
trip of the season to the station," said \
the assistant district forester. “He rode ' Wu/wkyl
up to the station bn his saddle horse
and tied it to a hitch rack nearby. As i
Friend stepped onto the porch, he was
greeted by a large grizzly bear, who SLKiBKnV
immediately objected to his trespass.
Friend shot the animal and, turning,
observed another approaching from be
hind the barn. This was dispatched.
Yet another grizzly came from the
other side of the house where a pile
of tin cans was heaped in a garbage
barrel and it met a like fate. When
the fourth bear made its appearance
a large yearling, Friend found his gun

17 Dead Men With Boots
On Found as Snow Melts

Virginia City, Nevada, Dodge
City, Kan., Deadwood, Dak. and
Creede, Colo., shone as meccas of
outlawry and terror.
The streets of these primitive bor
der towns In the salad days ran a
crimson tide of sin. Outlaws, rough
necks, and “bad men’’ composed the
shifting population.
In these towns mob violence was sub
stituted for courts and under such
reign of terror lynch law was the single
agency that could curb the spirit of
unbridled outlawry.
Since Creede, Colo., no town has
sprung into existence that could
eclipse them except one, and that one
for superlative venality and downright
cussedness, had them all skinned. Dur
ing its fleeting regime, it was a mod
em Sodom and Gomorrah. In fact, as
a spot which showed the decadence of
public morals, this one had Sodom and
Gomorrah stopped four ways from the
Jack, That town was the earlv-day
Taft.
Bloomed With Railroad
Taft came to life during the con
struction of the Chicago, Milwaukee &
St. Paul railway, and it flourished from
1906 to 1908, furnishing labor to a crazy
quilt of cosmopolites in the construc
tion of roadbed, tunnels and trestles
along its tortuous and devious geo
graphy. Hie town consisted of but a
single street stretching the length of
a half mile facing the right-of-way.
There were beautiful mountains ris
ing sentinel-like at Taft’s back door,
dwarfing in colossal grandeur the in
significant crazy galvanized shacks.
The whole town was a motley
collection of warped frame buildings.
The business of the railway company
was transacted in an abandoned box
car set alongside the Northern Pacific
tracks.
Sported 50 Saloons
In the very zenith of its glory as
the toughest town on the map, It sport
ed no less than 50 saloons, as many
gambling halls and a number of houses
of prostitution. There were many proofs
here of the devil’s cloven hoof. Ilie
town was the Jumping-off place of
stranded hulks, cut-throats, rough
necks, bull necks, swift fingered tin
horns, men who lived without work,
women who lived without shame, ex
convicts and criminals of varied classi
fications. Gunmen had waiting lists.
Dead Left Unburied
The commission of the capital crime
was rife. The criminal records of the
county were littered with prosecutions
entailing homicide provoked by rob
bery, but the major number of these
crimes never reached the courts. This
was principally due to the fact that
the town was not Incorporated and
hence no public revenue provided for
Ihe protection of life and property. It
would dizzy the arithmetic of memory
to speculate upon the number of lives
sacrificed with boots on in the indis
criminate pillage and slaughter—hu
man cadavers upon which it would be
utterly futile to predicate a corpus de
licti; but it is known as an incontro
vertible fact that after the winter's
snow had melted in the early spring
of the final year of Taft’s carnival of
crime and lawlessness, no less than 17
bodies were discovered in the buttes in
the immediate rear of the dens of in
iquity and sin. In these Instances the
process of decomposition had advanced
to such a degree that identification was
impossible.

went up in smoke no less than three
different times, twice through the or
ders of the railroad company and once
by accident.
Like a feline dowered with nine lives,
Taft rose, phoenix-like each time from
its ashes, and its final overthrow was
not accomplished until the forest fires
of 1910.
Taft today is a pleasant and beauti
ful stopping place between Missoula
and Wallace, Idaho. Only the ghostly
remembrance of its early day slayers
and courtesans linger on.

PRESSURE ON VITAL BILL
It is unfortunate that the lease-lend
bill cannot be permitted to go its way
in Congress amid calm atmosphere.
The Issues are so great that this is a
poor period for the ultra-partisan or
the individual. It may well be that our
course as a people -during the next 60
—even during the next 30—days' will
affect our future during centuries. By
all means, let us have open and free
discussion, without prejudice or pas
sion.
This country is not at war. It is the
legal right of any citizen in It to ex
press his opinion and his will. It is
not only the clear right, it is the clear
duty of all members of the houses of
congress to approach the lease-lend act
—which may lead to war—ln fearless

Draft May Take Men
Who Have Had Service
Four years’ service in the marine
corps will not exempt a man from the
draft, if called. This ruling, made by
C. A. Dykstra, director of the selective
service act, grew out of the applica
tion of Judson B. Eldridge of Bremer
ton, Wash., son of Mrs. Edith Eldridge
of Havre, for exemption from the draft
on the ground that he had completed
four years of service with the marines.

CCC ENROLLMENT PERIODS
(RANGED TO 8 EACH YEAR
Accordlng’to instructions received by
the state CCC selecting agency there
will be eight enrollment periods dur
ing the coming year for CCC junior
enrollees Instead of four. The four
quarterly periods will continue to be
held during April, July and October.
The new enrollments will be held Feb.
18-28, May 20-31, Aug. 20-31 and
Nov. 20-30.

Farmer's Racket
Angered Motorists

Twenty years ago motorists had more
ta contend with than occasional flat
tires.
Two motorists in 1933 met a wily
fanner near Humphrey station, Idaho,
and Monida, MakA. The farmer per
mitted Us irrigation ditch to overflow
the road and bad caused the space
about 10 feet wide to be practically
Impassable. On both sides of the road
the farmer erected “private property"
and "no trespassing" signs, leaving the
tourist no choice but to head through
the center of the pool.
Here the rancher stationed himself
with Us team from sunup until long
after midnight to catch the tourist.
He warned them against attempting to
pass the slough and offered to haul
them over it for the paltry sum of
W. If the motorist submitted quietly
the deed was done, but if he attempted
it himself he found his oar sinking
rapidly. An SOS brought the fanner,
who waited nearby with a happy grin
and before any help was given the
price was raised to »10.
One man protested loudly and for
his impudence was charged sls.

The council learned a house was be
ing built without permit. When its
committee found Shorty Thune con
structing a residence—ln miniature—
the council decided no permit was
necessary.
Comparing notes, the town wUttlers
recalled an instance of comparable
embarrassment on the other side.
When an Indigent family had the cUl
dren’s teeth fixed, the county charged
it off to the bridge fund. The account
was listed as "bridge work.”

Regular State Calls
W. E. Purnett, representative of the

his territory enlarged and now main

was killed at San Francisco when he
was struck by a motorcycle. Kennedy
was enroute to Honolulu on a vacation
