Montana’s largest county, and for many years the leading livestock county, according to statistics, was named for the “Beaver's Head,” rocky promontory on the Dillon-Twin Bridges road, recognized by Sacajawea, famed guide for Lewis and Clrak, as a landmark of her childhood days. The name also was given to the river whose tributaries near the Montana-Idaho boundary are the headwaters of the Missouri. The county is rich in historical lore. The Lewis and Clark Expedition traversed the county on both westward and return journeys.
