Trippet, Editor of the Kalispell News-Farm Journal, Marias Pass according to Margaret Thompson’s book, “High Traill of Glacier Park,” was named by Captain Lewis in honor of his OOUIIn, This break in the mountains gave the western route for James Hill's Great Northern railroad, when Minneapolis and Manitoba railroad companies merged their interests with his in January, 1890. Federal authorities forsaw such a transcontinental railroad and embodied th# act for an authorization granting a right of way. After the railroad was laid through the pass the Theqdqre Rooit* velt highway followed. The Indians once used this route, but temporarily had abandoned it for supersititious reasons before the coming of the Lewis and Clark expedition. In an early map published by Robert Greenshow ft ft marked only, "route across the mountains.” The pass was discovered by Frank Stevens, a civil and railroad an gineer, for James Hill. This was in 1889 and Stevens in later yean modestly recounted that it was by mere chance that he walked info the pass. ANACONDA COPPER MINING CO. “Work for a Greater and More Prosperous Montana”.
