Montana’s First Governor Ruled in 1699 Montana's first govenor was not Sidney Edgerton but a man named Sauvolle, appointed in 1699, the first govenor of Louisiana, to which the territory west of the Mississippi belonged. France ceded the country to Spain in 1762. It went back to France in 1800. It was bought by the United States in 1803. Montana continued to be under the control of Louisiana —in theory—until 1812. Next it was under the control of Missouri until 1821. that district having been carv ed out of Louisiana. It next passed under the control of Indiana, where it remained until 1854. The next seven years found it under the control of Nebraskp —up to 1861—after which it became part of Dakota until 1863 and them under Idaho until 1864. But this applies only to eastern Montana. Western Montana did not become American territory until 1846 when it was ceded to the United States by Great Britain. It was under Oregon control from 1848 to 1853. under Washington from 1853 to 1863 and under Idaho from 1863 to 1864 and then became Montana. The territory was organized May 26. 1864. The organic act was amended March 2, 1867. A portion of Dakota was added in 1873. ANACONDA COPPER MINING CO. “Work for a Greater and More Prosperous Montana”.
