KIDDER Ronan, Montana I reckon it is true that most of us do not worry very much about the possibilities of disaster or mis fortune until they actually strike. We read the statistics concerning automobile accidents or cancer or polio, and while we realize some one has to pile up these figures, it never really occurs to us that the someone might be lis. For our peace of mind, this is as it should be, for, as the old saying has it, The coward dies a thous and deaths; the valiant die but once.” While certainly I lay no claim to being one of the "valiant,” I have always agreed with the idea. Only three days before the onset of my polio, I got into quite a dis cussion on this very subject with some friends of ours whose big worry was the atomic bomb. At that time I had no inkling that a test of my views was so near at hand but even now I would not change them. When dread of the future takes control a man is a gone goose anyway. At the same time I have come to realize that those statistics we read are made up of people like you and me. They are not some comfortably 'impersonal quantity W YCUurXlglM er Ml a. —»3« as. I*—*—"— HUXSOL DRUG Live and Travel ■«, m the MICHIGAN I ARROW r.h^^y^r YORK • *CLIMATE and < •YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOM ’■ v THE HERALD-NEWS, Wolf Point, Roosevelt County, Montana like 25 cases of virus Q per 100,000 of population. They are boys and girls and fathers and mothers— real people, who probably had no more intention of becoming stalls-, tics than you or I. * Surprisingly enough, there is no way of looking at a fellow and predicting whether or not he will have polio. His age doesn't make much difference —it may run from five months to 50 years. His job doesn’t make much difference — my friend Frank was a wood cut ter and Hugh was a doctor, and both are now in the same kind of "retirement” as mine. Background doesn't seem to make much difference either —Russ came to the Respirator Center from New York's tough East Side, while lit tle Shirley came from a small farm in New York state. Gloria was a night-club singer brought from Havana; Marian, a school teacher returned from ■ Germany; the Rev erend was a medical missionary flown out of French West Africa. Certainly there is no system by which you could have picked these people as victims of polio. Cer tainly none of them were planning on becoming statistics. There are some other things I learned abput being a polio sta tistic and one is that statistics don’t tell the whole truth. The figures show that about 50 percent of those who contract polio eventually recover completely, another 25 per cent are left with minor impair ments. and the remainder are ser iously crippled or die. But the fig ures give no indication of the size of the battle. Even those "minor” cases of polio often require up to six months for complete recovery. More serious ones may take a year or two years of treatment. And some take a llketime. There just is no such animal as a trivial case of polio because of the potential danger in every one. Few of the diseases we fight today are costly in terms of medical treatment, or for that matter, in terms of useful lives interrupted or made less use ful. Just as we are inclined to believe that someone else will provide the material for the statistics on auto accidents or heart disease, we are some times inclined to feel that we can't do much to change them. Of ten the battle toward improvement is hard and results seem slow, but still we keep on trying. Many of us have lived to see the great scourges of the past like smallpox, diphtheria and typhoid defeated, and it is just as reasonable to ex pect that heart disease and cancer and even automobile accidents will be largely eliminated in our time. And right now, this very year of 1954, we have a real chance to do something about the polio sta tistics. Right now, this year, for the first time the fight against po lio has produced a vaccine which gives every promise of success. It will cost a lot of money — more money than we have ever given to the March of Dimes before. But I am one of the statistics that thinks it will be worth every penny. — MOAX MOTICT — xorxcx or ayvxxcatxox yob TBAxarXB or BXTAXZi MOVOB uoim.
