r New Hniokelewt Powder. Tests have recently been made in Colorado with a new smokeless pow der termed jovite, for which great advantages are claimed. Two holes of the same character and depth were driven in different cross-cuts. One was loaded with a nine-ounce stick of ordinary 40 per cent dynamite, and the other with six gunce9 of jovite. The dynamite was first fired, and the jovite about two minutes later. The holes were then inspected. Both shots broke about the same quantity of rock, but while it was impossible to slay in the drift where the dynamite was ex ploded, the only smoke in the jovite drift came from the fuse and caused no inconvenience. That the smoke cume from the fuse was shown by lighting the same length of fuse with cap attached in another drift sim ilarly connected without air. It is claimed that the explosive is not only smokeless, but that it will not "freeze." It is impervious to dampness and can be handled with absolute safety, it is claimed, as it cannot be exploded except with a primer. The final experiments con ducted in the hard granite of Uattle mountain have been entirely satis factory, and arrangements will be made immediately for construction of a plant for its manufacture. Tonoptth City. The work in the shaft on the Tonopah City Company's property is progressing rapidly. The timbering mis been completed to a depth of one hundred feet and the work of sinking is now being rapidly carried on. Man ager Salsherry has left for the Coast to bring in a gasoline hoist and other necessary equipments for pushing the work on the property, and with the machinery in place, the white porphyry which caps the ledges will soon tie penetrated. The L'0,000 shares of treasury stock which was placed on the market has been eager ly sought for, and only a limited amount is left for subscrip tion. In sizing up the location of this property and the energy that is being showu by the purties in control, it can lie said that the Tonopah City offers one of the most promising in vestments in the camp.
