Two years ay) there was iiotliinj on the siteof Tonopali there was noth ing save two or three pioneer's tents, and even one year ago along the main broad street, in the center of the wide draw which divides the cluster of mountains that form desert landmarks, there existed less than a half dozen wooden structures. The rest of the habitation were tents. With the regularity of some vast machine all them have fiven way to blocks ami building affording every modern convenience and comfort, suitable for their purposes and of credit as to apearance. The wonder is, how it has all been done. Then there was no water here. Wagons brought in by the barrel stuff of doubtful quality; now a pipe line provides in abund ar.d of the best. Fuel was far away and expensive. Almost the en tire teaming sorviceof the State had goue out of commission, and the forces of resurection and replenish ment had ail to be organized. Every line of communication had to be sup plied with wells and stations. As usual, the stage men arose to the .-ituation aud brought hi the popula tion, but the wonder of it all is, how. it has been ssible for mule and horse power to deliver here all the millions of pounds of material neces sary to make up a city. An article of la.-t week partially enumerated the features of city life now part and iarcel of Tonopah, showing that sh? is far a head of hundreds of eastern towns of greater population and which have been in existence for a century. The story of the dawning year will be revealed by events as lime unfolds. That Tono pah is yet even in the beginning.of a great and lasting career is evident, patent to all who have made an ef fort to comprehend the vastness of the mineral wealth which now iuvites exploration and conversion to the use of man and the financial world. The merchant who iiought them, fearing they would fall on the floor said: ' Will they lay there?" "Oh, no," she stammered, ' they are all roosters." And now the merchant gets red in the face at. the sight of a chicken. The Eureka Sentinel wants an in augural ball when Sparks takes the governor's chair.
