A State Mineralogist.
The mining State of Nevada re
quires a Mute .Mineralogist ami
Geologist. The need is a pressing
one, and the absence of such an
oflicial in a commonwealth laden with
mineral wealth as is Nevada, is
difficult of explanation to the visitor.
The State has a fine collection of
minerals, which, however, U not up
to the present moment by any means.
It should secure the pavilion in this
city, a splendid stone structure, which
the county probably would donate for
the purpose, and the incoming legis
lature should create the oftiee of
Mineralogist and Geologist. This
official should have a laboratory and
devote all his time to the assistance
of the prospector, lie should deter
mine all minerals sent to him. Many
a prospector has tested ore for gold
that contained metal more valuable
of which he knew nothing. In fact,
not one prospector in a hundred
knows anything about valuable ores.
apart from the gold, silver, copper
or lead they may contain. How
many know tin ore, or zinc ore, or
antimony ore, or platinum, and yet
they are all found in Nevada. How
many recognize the rare earths,
some of them worth their weight in
gold, when they see them in their
It would be the duty of the pro
posed State official to labor for the
imparting of this knowledge; to in
sped and report upon new mining
camps; to further the interests of
local mine owners, and to some ex
tent at least protect the foreign
investor in Nevada mines. Carson
What is the matter with a cornbina
lion of the proposed office of State
Mineralogist with that of State Mine
Inspector? It is time that the min
ing interests get something for their
money some return for the taxes
laid upon them
The California law establishing the
State Mining Bureau and the office of
State Mineralogist, together with the
Colorado statutes, creating the office
of Mine Inspector and delining his
duties and power, furnishes plenty
of form and precedent as a guide for
Word has been received from Judge
Hawley, in which he says that he is
steadily improving, though slowly,
The attack of insomnia is gradually
being conquered and his cough is not
so severe, and with plenty of sun
shine and fresh air he feels that lie
will pull through. He is very impa
tient at the slowness of the improve
ment, but his friends are delighted
that there is a change for the better.
There seems to be plenty of money
in the United Stales for church work
In three years the Methodist de
nomination has raised a fund of
twenty million dollars. This is more
than was raised during the hundred
One company in Humboldt county
has performed the annual assessmen
work on thirty mining claims.
Take things as they come. If you
don't, some one else will.
