TOXOPAII i;ONANZA.
SATURDAY, MAIU II 2.
The Water Works.
At a trial lust week, from the new
fire plug placed in front of the Nye
County Mercantile Co. establishment
on Main street, a stream of water
was thrown from a three-quarter
inch nozzle at least one hundred and
twenty-five feet, demonstrating to
the satisfaction of the citizens
who witnessed the test that the
Crystal Water Company is not alone
a comfort and convenience but also a
great protection to the community.
Again we urge that the generous
offer of the Crystal Water Company
to furnish, free of cost, all the water
required for fire purposes in the
camp, should be accepted without
delay. The expense of providing
t ie necessary tanks or reservoirs for
the storage of such water should be
cheerfully met by the property
owners. As to the question of sup
ply, it is an established fact that
with its present resources the Crys
tal Water Company can furnish, in
addition to the quantity required for
fire purposes, an abundant supply of
water for a population three times
as large as that now in Tonopah,
and that through the further de
velopments planned and already in
operation by the company, its source
of supply will still largely increase.
Stay of Sentence.
When the U. S. District court con
vened it was expected that J. H. B.
Harris would be sentenced, as he
was found guilty the Saturday before
of sending obscene literature through
the mail. When the prisoner ap
peared before the bar to receive sen
tence, his attorney, Samuel Piatt,
offered a stay of sentence and a mo
tion to quash proceedings. He
brought out a new condition of alle
gations. He plead that the indict
ment was defective insomuch as it
failed to state that the objectional
letter was addressed to any party
or parties, and as there was no ad
dress there could be no violation of
the law. Mi. Piatt cited an au
thority that bore out his plea, and it
brought the case so directly to the
attention of Judge Hawlev that he
deferred sentence until he could de
cide the merit of the objection raised
by Attorney Piatt. Carson News.
Married.
In this city, March 24th, by the
Rev. Mr. McCreery, the Hon. Thomas
McCabe, of Tonopah, and Miss Liva
Hartine, of Carson.
The groom is assemblyman from
Nye county and the bride is the
youngest daughter of ex-Congressman
Bartine.
Mr. and Mrs. McCabe departed
for San Francisco. After a few days
sojourn in that city they will return
to Nevada and take up their resi
dence in Tonopah. Their many
friends wish them a future of pros
perity and happiness unalloyed.
The wedding is one of the roman
ces of the inaugural ball, where the
contracting parties first met. Fred
dishing and wife stood up with the
couple. Carson Appeal.
A New Press.
The Inyo Register comes out an
all-home print, from its own cylinder
press and electric motor a decided
improvement. The paper is a steady, j
conservative worker for the good,
but the yahoo element of Bishop
haven't sufficient sense to accord it
.that support which would most re
dound to their own interests.
