BIG CHECK FOR LOT OF
MONTANA-TONOPAD ORE
Sixty-one Tons Bring; Over JH.CCt at
the Salt Lake Smelter.
The Salt Lake Tribune of the 16th
says: "From a little over sixty-one
tons of ore from the Montana-Tono
pah of Nevada, which reached the
furnaces of the American Smelting
and Refining company at Murray
during the day, the local treasurer
for the bonanza drew down a check
for $13,073.59 this after the cost of
transportation, working charges at
the smelter, and the et ceteras that
are not a little expensive themselves
had been deducted. The consignment
was divided into two lots, one of 34
tons showing 426 ounces silver, with
5.06 ounces gold per ton; the other,
224 ounces silver, with 2.33 ounces
gold.
"Each was taken out in the pros
ecution of development work, ex
plained Adrian C. Ellis, Jr., vice
president of the company, whose
interests are scattered throughout
Zion. Not a pound of it, indeed, was
deliberately stoped, while two more
carloads from the same source are
now in transit.
In the fissure recently encountered
in a north drift in the Montana-Tono-
pah, and at a point 186 feet north of
the shaft, is now exposed, according
to a report from Manager Knox,
four feet of rock, which affords an
average of $200 per ton, while other
portions of the bonanza, which ap
pears to be furnishing- the greater
portion of the blood for Tonopah's
arteries at this time, are reported
in equally gratifying conditions. In
deed, local interests are looking for
ward to a dividend the present year,
and certainly Manager loox is doing
all in his power that expectations
shall be realized."
THE MINE'S PRESENT SHAPE. .
Work at the property is progress
ing favorably, and, if anything, bet
ter ore than ever is being extracted.
Development on the 460 and 512-foot
levels is being pushed on the ledges,
and the ore therefrom is running
very high in values. T . ) Winze start
ed in the west drift of the 512, about
twenty feet from the crosscut, is
down forty feet and at that point
shows great values and seven feet
width of ore. The latter is of a sul
phide character, and through the
ledge pass streaks that will run up
into the thousands in gold and silver.
The crosscut on this level is now in
nearly 300 feet. The drift started
to the west at 200 feet is in about
twenty feet and has opened up a
body of ore from ten to twelve feet
wide and the greater part of it is of
shipping grade. This ledge is point
ing directly to the Midway ground,
and sooner or later that company
will catch it in their north crosscut.
It will also undoubtedly enter the
North Star ground on the east."
The crosscut to the north in the
Montana, at the 612 station, is now in
ninety feet, and it is thought that
within forty feet it will tap the ledge
that is being worked upon in the lev
el above. And if it holds good in
value and extent, and from indica
tions in the bottom of the , winze
there appears to be no question on
that point, one of the biggest and
richest bodies of ore in the district
will be opened up. The ship
ments of ore still continue from the
mine and the receipts are building up
a strong treasury reserve.
For the time that work has pro
ceeded on the Montana it makes a
better showing in value than any
mine in the west, with the exception
of the Mizpah, its rival on the south.
It is not yet a year since the first
shovelful of dirt was turned over,
and in these few months more than
2000 feet of workings have been
opened up and several millions of dol
lars' worth of ore exposed. The
property has been ably financed.is eco
nomically and excellently managed,
and within the next three years it
will prove itself one of the mining
wonders of the world.

CALIFORNIA BEARS.
Manipulating Managers of Old
Mines Up Against It.
A California mining engineer re
cently returned from the Pacific
coast to Boston, says: "The Corn
stock mines have advanced this year
a bit and on a more legitimate basis.
It has been the fashion for many
years past for the managers of the
Comstock mines to make money by
being short of their stocks, but some
unseen power has picked up several
of the best of them, and is now let
ting the shorts squirm without re
vealing itself. Many mines on
the Comstock lode that could pay
dividends under economical manage
ment have been allowed to sell in the
San Francisco share market for less
than the value of the machinery as
juuk above ground.
"It is figured that San Francisco
puts half a million a month into horse
racing, and half a million a month in
to mining assessments. The Com
stock managers had a great scheme
for corralling a large part of the
mining share market assessments.
Half a million a month paid into le
gitimate mining would have gone a
long way, but paid in largely upon
capital which did not exist, it went
into the pockets of the bears, and
not into the mines.
"I don't believe the present is a
healthy time for bears in California
or in Wall street. They are never
satisfied until they have sold them
selves into a hole."
