Maxson, Morehouse and Others Addressed Appreciative Audiences Last Night on Public Issues. : There was a big crowd at Miners' Exchange hall last evening when the Republican campaign was practically opened in 'Tonopah so far as flow of rhetoric Is concerned by Hon. H. B. Maxson and Hon. H. V. More house and Hon. P. M. Bowler. The meeting was called to order by .Mark R. Averill, and Col. Maxson, Republican candidate for congress, after a brief address by Chairman Averill was introduced to the audi ence amid cheering. Colonel Max ' son made a short but succinct ad dress, and devoted some little part of it to his labor record, pointing out that in Tombstone, Arizona, some years ago, he had continued to pay miners in his employe $4 per day for eight hours' work, when the balance of the miners were on strike for rec ognition of the eight-hour demand. L. A. Gibbons, Republican candi date for district attorney, was next introduced. In the course of his ad dress he showed that a district at torney has two primal duties civil duties in advising the county com missioners and other county officers ASKS FOR LETTERS ON DAVIS ESTATE Letters of administration were ap plied for yesterday by G. B. Welsh in the estate of Olive Davis, of Cherry Creek, Nevada, who died September 23. The estate consists of farming implements, mining tools, mining stock and several claims in ..the Cherry Creek district, and is valued at $1000. The hearing of the peti tion was set for November 2. P. A. McCarren is the attorney for the pe titioner. MARRIAGE LICENSE GRANTED. A marriage license waB granted at the county clerk's office yesterday to William Barrett of Millers and Mrs. Mary Johnson of Tonopah. . . a mm DISPLAY OF MUCH INTEREST . Mrs. Richardson has on display in the window of her millinary store one of the latest creations of the import ed directoire sheath, gowns. It is in color a cream messeline and has one of the latest Parisian sashes attached to the belt. The gown is a beauty, and undoubtedly the display window will be the center of attraction the next several days for the ladies of Tonopah. There are also an exhibi tion a number of the evening waists, which are so popular now in the east ern and western cities. Mrs. Rich ardson has just received a shipment of neck novelties, and a full line of tailored suits and princess dresses, which will be on display. Five year old claret at $1.50 per gallon. H. J. His address was more extended than those of the other speakers, and was general in its scope, being a most comprehen sive elucidation of the Republican national platform. He paid a glow ing tribute to the work of Roosevelt in purifying the business morals and systems of the county, and then eulo gized Taft as a man fitted by all qualifications of heart and mind, edu cation and experience, capability and ability, to carry out the Roosevelt policies at home and abroad, fear lessly and justly. - The speakers were frequently in terrupted by applause, and attention was intense throughout all the ad dresses AN ENJOYABLE SOCIAL EVENT Mrs. J. W. Sinclair on Wednesday evening entertained the members of the Sanctuary society, at her home on South street. Some twenty-six guests were present at the enjoyable affair, Mrs. Sinclair being assisted in receiving by Misses O'Meara and Griffin and Mrs. G. W. Strosnlder. Music, cards and other games helped to speed the evening, and dainty collation regaled the creature appetiiies of the guests. PERSONAL MENTION T. C. Odgers, one of Tonopah's pioneers, jeturned yesterday from Oakland. Colonel H. B. Maxson, Republican nominee for congress, arrived yester day from Goldfield. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Nay of Sals- bury are in the city. They are the guest 8 of Mr. and Mrs H. H. War burton. "Dry Wash" Wilson of Round Mountain returned yesterday from a trip to the coast. Swasey, Chief Tonopah Volunteer Fire Department, Tonopah, Nevada: "My Dear Mr. Swasey Referring to your letter of September 8, in which you ask the Tonopah Mine Operators' association for fin- ancial assistance toward the erection of a gymnasium for the vol- unteer fire department, to cost approximately $2300. "Your communication was read at a meeting of this association, held October 7, and 1 was directed to Inform you that this associa- tion will give a total of $500 for this purpose, after you have raised the other $1800, which you estimate as being necessary to complete the "building. "The members of the Tonopah Mine Operators' association were very much interested in your good work, and wish you much , success. .,' "Yours very truly, "W. W. CHARLES, Secretary." The above letter Is self-explanatory, and yesterday evening the members of the fire department were jubilant over the liberal donation, and which puts their proposed gymnasium "in sight." Tbe donation was unexpected as to size and shows that the 'mine ( operators' association is certainly appreciative of the work of the department. It is to be hoped that other large concerns and organizations follow up the good precedent now established, and . lend further aid to the department. . . . POPULAR YOUNG COUPLE WERE WED WEDNESDAY -J. A. Cole and Miss Eva Qulllian were united in marriage yesterday afternoon at the residence of the bride on McQuillan street, the Rev. Lloyd B. Thomas officiating. Only Immediate friends of the contracting parties were present at the ceremony, but in the evening a reception was held and a large number of friends and well wishers called to tender their congratulations. A large num ber of presents were received, among them being a handsome silver set which was presented by the officials and employes of the Tonopah Exten sion mine. Mr. Cole is one of the pioneers of Tonopah and for several years has been employed at the Tonopah Ex tension mine as foreman.. He is one of the most popular men in the coun ty, for with his long residence here he has made ,, many friends. The bride is one . of the most popular members of the younger set and by her charming and gracious manners has made many friends, Mr. and Mrs. Cole will make their future home in Tonopah. NOTICE TO FIREMEN. There will be a meeting of the vol unteer fire department this evening at the fire house at 8 o'clock. The letting of the contract for the erec tion of the gymnasium will take place and all members are requested to at tend. Other matters of Importance will also come before the meeting. Mining and Eagles-Elks teams, at the Inyo county fair at Bishop, 'California, played yesterday, was won by the Montanas, the score 1 to 0. It was a pitcher's battle, with Prout on the firing line for the Montanas and Den niston for the fraternal team.
