Lesson of the Day This Is Columbus day. as every schoolboy knows, but few realize the heartburnings, sufferings and sacrifices that accompanied the discovery of the outpost of the great North American continent. The voyage resulted j in the finding ot ourselves, as Dooley would tie pieaseti ua.e ... - .... life's dream of the young C-tioese mariner whose owu country scorned to treat with his follies and dreams and forced the father of America to go elsewhere to find a patron opulent enough to finance bis expedition. From England, the land of seamanship and the home of a maritime race, where he was repulsed, he went to Portugal, only to meet with a similar rebuff. Thence he journeyed to Spain and. through the kindness of the good Queen Isabella, he succeeded in making an impression that elicited the favorable endorsement of the royal cor.sort. King Ferdinand, and the ground plot for the expedition was laid. This preliminary work discloses the true character of the lad and furnishes the keynote of the success that distinguished his future opera tions. Here he displayed the stiek-lo-itive qualities that are essential to success in all undertakings. He could meet the frowns, contumely, insults and indignities heaped on him by a lot of namby -pamby courtiers and still feel the divine enthusiasm within him had not abated a jot by such af fronts. He had an inspiration that amounted almost to a revelation from on high, and burning with the leal of the martyrs of his church, he re- Portland mained steadfast and true to the impulse that led him to declare his belief j Venice that the world mas spherical and that by sailing away from the direction sacramento .... of the Indies he would eventually reach the shores of far Cathay and inri- j san Francisco dentally open to the commerce of Castile and Aragon a new land that j lxis Angeles . would be as fruitful a any of the colonies in the Orient that had been .Oakland acquired by the crown of Spain. But that is not material to the question, or, rather, the lesson of the hour. The one overwhelming fart about the career of Columbus is the persist ence that could not be daunted by odds such as never had before been pitted against a single human being. Wealth, influence, station, rank and science were united against the mariner whose humble antecedents fur nished food for many a paltry joke in palace and cabin. But Columbus surmounted every opposition. His earnestness could not be dampened by prejudice or animosity, and he applied himself with a zeal that finally con quered. He was a good prototype for the hardy pioneers of the new world who were to follow in bis footsteps. This steadfastness of purpose should impress on the youthful mind the value of determination and resolution to strive and keep on striving until all obstacles should be overcome and the last difficulty surmounted True as the needle to the pole. Columbus remained faithful to his expressed mis sion of finding a new continent, and this courageous doggedness was re warded many a thousand fold. But after he set sail on what even his royal admirers and sponsors were prone to regard as a visionary quest, his troubles had only begun. His little squadron of three vessels, two of them little Better than shallops, for the caravels Pinta and Nina were not of a tonnage equal to the smallest lifeboats of the queenly roperator, the levia than of today whose prow cuts the blue waters first parted by the straining keels of the argosy cf Columhus. Before embarking on his last cruise, which was to give the world a new continent. Columbus had voyaged to Iceland, where it is supposed he had heard hints of the distant Vinland existing west and south of that hardy empire. Be that as it may. he was first to start out to place on the map a land bathed in the legendary lore of the day and steeped in elfish tradition. None of these deterred Columbus from following the bent ot his soul, and he set forth with a do or die de termination to win or never return empty handed to the home of his bene factors. He waa actuated by a grand purpose, and he set his face against all prophets of evil and croakers mho would have been pleased to thwart the will of the explorer. But Columbus remained unmoved. Thus he trained his sail for the uncharted seas where death lurks in every breeze and angry winds raise mountainous billows to such fearful heights as to para lyze the best energies of the modern mariner, with all his equipment of steam, wireless, double compartment ships, engines that tear their way through tempests and calm with unruffled speed. The diminutive barks sailed toward the aureole of the setting sun, and kept on until, after pass ing the Canaries, when the crews lost faith in their commander and im portuned him to turn back. "Sail on,'" was the only reply vouchsafed by the Genoese. Thus they kept on from day to day until the compass even mutinied against the determination of Columbus and refused to point the war to the north pole. Magnetic digressions filled the Ignorant sailors with dismay, and again they beseeched their leader to turn back. "Sail on," was his stern rejoinder. Columbus did not know what it was to tak the back trail. He had burned his bridges behind him and he proposed to keep toward the west until he and his crews should be Bwal lowed up by the golden glow or he would be rewarded w ith the object of bis search. Storms came and went and provisions ran low, and once more the crews of the three crafts sent a committee to Columbus with a prayer to INTERESTING SIDELIGHTS j NEW DAILY AUTO STAGE TONOPAH TO G0LDFIEL1) Leaves Mizpah Hotel 2:00 p. m.
