GREELEY AS BOOT A.VD BARTER.
It begins to bo very evident to those
who will not allow themselves to be
blinded by appearances, that the Demo
cratic leaders in Nevada are preparing to
carry oat a programme which is to be
universally sustained in the doubtful
States, namely: that of sacrificing the
head of the so-cilled Liberal ticket in
order to secure a majority of deserting
Republicans and possumated Democrats
in the Legislature. This policy, and the
exertions made in behalf of their Con
greasional nominees, indicate , plainly
enough that the purpose of the schemers
who are mustering their motley clans
under the false colors of Liberalism, and
whose wretched motto is, "anything to
beat Grant," is to make the Farmer of
Chappaqua a stool-pigeon where he can
best be used in that role; a tigure-head.
where there are people who can be de
ceived by such a barefiaced imposition as
his candidacy is; and as a flabby joint of
trading capital where he can be bartered
off for votes for Legislative and Congres
sional candidates. The suggestive apathy
toward Greeley on the part of certain
well known Democratic fuglemen; the
forced but very steady strain to make
Kendall appear as a wonderfully faithful
and useful Congressman (and they affect
to believe him the embodiment of repre
sentative perfection) ; and the well under
stood secret desire of the Democrats to
disappoint their Liberal allien of a, share
of the anticipated spoils; the purpose.
indeed, of the Democracy to make, so far
as possible, a clean and clear victory for
'themselves a victory whose glories and
emoluments they may not have to share
with their superserviceable catspaws
the Liberals these, we say, are ample
signs and reasons for being on our guard
against a flank movement in the rear of
Greeley, and into that part of our lines
where lies the chance of selecting a Re
publican incumbent of the important
place xiow held by Senator Nye.
Let m not forget the importance of
this. Should the Republican party, by
distentions or apathy; bitter rivalries or
faithlesness; lack of courage to vote for
the whole ticket, or from any other cause,
throw away enough of the coming victory
to let the Democrats carry the Legislature
of this State, we shall add one more to
the now remote possibilities that the Con
gress of the United States may soon be
come so revolutionized in character as to
be under the rule of a majority, many of
whose members sympathized with, while
others of their members took part in, the
suspended but not fully extinguished re
bellion inaugurated by the slave-masters
of the South.
Don't forget this. Don't trade, at all.
with any Democrat, any Liberal any Dol
ly Varden or any emissary of the Bourbon
Democracy. If we hold together and
move shoulder to shoulder they cannot
beat one aide of as in any fight that we
may make this year; and they know it!
