THE LATESTTELEGRAMS.
Horace Greeley, following in the zig
zag footsteps of his illustrious predeces
sors, willl begin on Wednesday to swing
around the circle of the Ohio and Miss
issippi valley States, presenting the flag
of our country with its thirty-seven stars
our gellorious constitution: full amnesty
to rebels and complete damnation to
President Grant; distributing meanwhile,
some tracts concerning the beet crop and
the corruption and nepotism of the potato-bug;
and waving his cream-colored
locks in the September breeze. Go
west, young man; go west!
Attorney General Williams who is one
of the coolest headed men in the Repub
lic and one of our best lawyers, is of the
opinion that the Geneva arbitration has
awarded Uncle Sam all thrtt he had rea
son to expet. Considering that there
was but one representative of a govern-
ment of Republican form on that
tribunal we think Mr. Williams is quite
right. '
The soldiers and sailors arc flocking
into Pittsburg.
Bnrnside will preside over the Conven
tion which meets today.
The steamer Constitution encountered
a heavy pale near Maedalena and had to
throw overboard some of her cargo.
Stocks in the San Francisco Board are
improving.
Still it proves a difficult matter to find
jurors to try the Fair case.
if tne number 01 .Democrats wuo were
willing to take the pledge demanded at
our primaries on Saturday indicates the
disposition of the party throughout the
State, Greeley and Brown won't get votes
enough in Nevada to give Horace so
much of a sniif of sage brush as would
serve to remind him of the days when
after his overland ride, he counselled the
substitution of the Canada thistle for
that niodest and unoffensive species of
native shrubbery. The probabilities now
are that Greely will be worse beaten in
this State than John D. Winters was in
lStiti or worse, by several hundred
votes, than Seymore was in 1S(8. Grant's
majority will not be less than twelve
hundred, and it will prbably reach fif
teen hundred.
The Placeb Anors. This is the title
of a new Republican weekly pajer which
has just made its appearance in Auburn,
California. It is under the editorial con
trol of Mr. James B. Mc Quillan, a verv
vigorous and capable writer. It ought
to succeed; for it is " well set in the
field " and preaches the true political
gospel. Good luck to it.
W e have the authority of the San Juan
IHtr Cluh, that when people down there
get married they treat the printers to hot
rice soup and scraps of cold chicken.
This custom seems to have been intro
duced by the Celestials, who do a big
business in the matrimonial line.
'No Hope. ' F:iiling to find anything
encouraging in the election returns along
the Atlantic shore, from Maine to North
Caaolina, the Democratic managers have
taken their figure-head's advice, to 'Go
West.' They are now working upon Illi
nois and Indiana. Their newspaper col
umns are full of congratulations upon the
constantly improving prospects in the
States which are not reporting returns of
recent elections. It is astonishing, the
Democratic migration that must have ta
ken place to Illinois and Indiana from
Maine, Khotle Islam, (Jonnectticut, West
Virginia and North Carolina! We fear
that to 'Go West' will not save the cause.
Its fate is written, Ephesians II: 1'2.
