On Saturday there arrived in town an old pioneer of Califor nia and Nevada, and one of the first who pitched his tent in Eagle valley. In 1859 S. Buckingham, the gentleman of whom we speaK, come over from Jttarysvilie and started a store in Carson, and for several years made it his home. In 1867 he got tne mining fever and went to Uanfornia, then to Unionville, Humboldt county, Nevada; and in time drifted to Arizona, and run races with the Apaches. About a year afterward he returned again to Humboldt with his scalp all safe. He and John C. Fall ore old time friends.and Fall always wants Buck when he is tired of his wanderings. If we thought that Buck not would see this, we would say that there never lived a better man than S. Buckingham. He is on his way to Son Francisco on business, but will return to Humboklt in time to vote for Grant & Wilson. For the benefit of his friends who did not see him before his departure last night, we will state that he looks as he used to, only his hair is as white as snow, caused by a sudden and severe en counter with a band of Apaches while in Arizona. For two days past a large fire lias been raging in the mountains west i town. The locality nryiiaa' to be a little above and west of the old Ash mill. It pre sented a beautiful sight on Saturday night - Apparently about a mile square of thejside of the mountain was a solid moss of rolling fire, mounting aloft in deep red drifting flames, painting strange, fantastic shapes and fancies on the dark clouds and black smoke above. These fires in the mountain at this season are very dangerous, and often ruin large tracts of timber that will take Nature centuries to replaced Thus far, we learn, it has done no damage being cot fined to the brush, chips and debris left by the wood cutters of laat year. We hope it may not reach the cord wood further up, for there is no conjecture where it might not go if once fairly started. r GoNTt to Caufobwia. On Saturday Wm. Patterson Esq., District Attorney of this County, left for California to at tend the meeting of the Grand Lodge of ""jCfood Templers. He will be gone for etgnt or ten days, and while in ban Fran cisco will stop at the Knss House. .We are thus particular in giving his hotel. tor the benefit of his numerous lady friends. We know he started one day sooner than he intended, and suspecting there may be some disappointed females we apologize tor nis sudden depart ure, and assure them that it is all right, and that he will return in time to attend their divorce suits at the neltt meet ing of Court. We assure people in Cal ifornia that he may meet, that uncle Billy must be a good man, or the Republican party would not have concluded to vote for him, an old democrat, for re-election to the office of District Attorney. The Hong Kong Daily Pirxs is about the size of the Alta, and is published at $2 50 per month. The venture of publishing tin English paper in China, seems to be a paying one, as the papers are well edited and full of advertisements. Ladd & Kklxt. We are permitted to state that this new firm are making all arangements necessary to prosecute their business in a business manner. Their posters ore to be seen in all parts of the town; their advertisement in The Carson New Appeal, and their bulletin board in front of their office, and business begins to coine in already. There is nothing like knowing how to do business. These gen tlemen seem to have learned the secret of success from Barnum to advertise largely and keep your business before the people. Stalks. Davis A; Gillson have set up a pair of scales on Carson street opposite their store, of huge dimensions, for the purpose of weighing freight in large quantities. These scales we believe are the hrst of that size in town and win weigh anything from a piece of cheese to a quartz mill. , - ju.; .oi, Pioche Daily Record. Pat Holland has made his paper a daily. It is lively und city-like and ought to get Pioche amalgum into Pat's pockets by the pound. with the proprietors, and know that thev always keep the largest stx-k and great est variety of goods in the State. Davis is one of the oldest merchants in this town, and the reason why he has done so well is because he always sells at the lowest rates. People will buy where they can buy the best article for the least money. Serenade.
